So I applied to computer science as the major I wanted. However, I did not know that there were courses required beforehand to join that major. I was rejected but I really did not know. Is it possible for me to call and ask them to change it or there is no chance to correct my mistake. Please, stony was my first choice.
Was your application to the college rejected or did Stony Brook accept you but not into the CS major? It looks like acceptance into the major is competitive. If you were accepted to the college you can apply to become a CS major after you complete 10 credits of CS courses and receive at least a B- in them. If you weren’t accepted to the university there’s really not much you can do.
I was just rejected
It was your responsibility to know the requirements. There would be no chance of an appeal.
I don’t think students HAVE to complete the requirements to be accepted to the college. It looks like students who have certain credits MAY be accepted to the major if they’re accepted to the college, but you have to be accepted to the college first. Did they say you were rejected for not completing prereqs?
Yes I was given an email saying I was rejected. It may seem that the requirements have nothing to do with getting into the school itself. I guess I wasn’t good enough to be accepted.
Where else did you apply? Is Stony Brook the closest SUNY or just your favorite?
I applied to buffalo and bing. Stony was my top choice, closest and favorite
The other SUNYs are very good too. Can you afford them if you’re accepted? My son is a CS major. He didn’t like Stony Brook because it seems like many students are commuters. Have you heard from the other schools yet?
rejected too. its ok everyone!!
I don’t know what to do anymore. I’ve given up all hope of going to a descent college.
OK, deep breaths.
It hurts to be rejected. A lot. And it feels (particularly here, on CC) as though everyone is better and smarter and you’re just not good enough.
But that’s not the reality.
The reality is that they have x number of spots, and what they were looking for to fill those spots was not what they saw on your application. They don’t know you. They don’t know what your parents and best friends and teachers all see in you that makes them smile. All they saw was numbers and courses on a page.
So what do you do?
Well, for starters, I’m a big fan of Ice Cream therapy. In fact, if you’re on Long Island, most Ralphs’ are opening this weekend. My favorite flavor is Cherry Garcia, though my daughter (who works in one) loves some of the other flavors.
If you’re not a fan of Ralph’s, Carvel will do.
Then you take give yourself until tomorrow morning to have a massive pity party. Tears are absolutely acceptable.
Then tomorrow, you wake up and look at your other options. You’ve sent out other apps, and gotten other acceptances, right? You mention Buffalo and Binghamton. Have you been accepted to either? You look at your options. You join the group chats for accepted candidates. You start to make friends with the other kids going to those schools, kids who chose those schools and are excited to be going to them. And you change your focus from Stony Brook to some other place.
When my daughter didn’t make her first choice, we spoke a lot about the idea that God puts you where you need to be. Apparently for you, it’s not Stony Brook. That’s OK-- He knows what he’s doing. You’ll do great somewhere else. Apparently “closest” isn’t the right option for you. And Binghamton is only 4 hours away… a nice ride. Buffalo is a bit further, but that’s OK. (And it’s not an incredibly expensive flight)
So you find the school that is perfect for you, the group of kids in a chat that are enough like you to be comfortable, but different enough to make this the adventure it should be. And you put Stony Brook behind you.
Also, there’s still time to send a couple more applications. And around May 5, there’ll be a list of colleges that miscalculated yield and still have a few spots (your common app must be ready to go then since the spots are snapped up quickly).
What are your stats?
Have you taken Calculus? Precalculus? Any cs experience (AP cs principles, intro to programming…?l
I haven’t been to Bing, but recently toured the engineering department at U Buffalo. That tour included the computer science department. It was much better than decent. The only drawback for you would be the distance. Aside from flights already mentioned, you could take the train or drive. UB let’s all students have cars on campus and does not charge for the parking pass.
If things don’t work out, then starting at a 2 year program and transferring (even to Stony Brook) could also be a great path.
