Rejection from stony brook

I was previously rejected from Stony Brook, and I don’t know how to feel. Stony was my first choice due to the fact that It is the best suny for pre medical studies, and I hope to become a pathologist& take nutrition as a minor. Anyway, I feel like I didn’t even get a chance. My sat scores were low (1490) , a gpa of a 3.0, and my Highschool transcript is pretty decent. I also was eligible for EOP, but I have no idea what went wrong. When I asked why I was rejected, the only response I received, was due to the fact that they had limited seats and I could not be offered a seat in their class of 2019. I was thinking of an appeal, but I feel like either way I will be rejected. Does anyone know what I should do? I’m completely lost at this point.

Is it the only school you applied to? I don’t know much about stony brook. If you feel an appeal is necessary, give it a shot, it can’t really do more damage in my opinion.

You’re SAT is below their 25th percentile and your GPA is well below their average as well. You can always try an appeal but don’t hold your breath.
Maybe look into some local CCs and just start over fresh?

@rhyannag‌ hey bro im sorry about the rejection, but heres the thing: my brother and sister go to Stony Brook (one goes for mechanical engineering, and the other for Biochem) and they ABSOLUTELY HATE THE SCHOOL. (My sister is on premed track too so you both would technically be taking about the same classes)

Its time to turn a new leaf, Stony Brook didnt fall on your front door but other colleges will bro

I’m sorry to hear that, @rhyannag. I’m not sure that schools review the apps of students they rejected unless there was a major error somewhere. You can ask your guidance counselor about it though. Do you have any safeties lined up?

I applied to suny Oswego, adelphi, hofstra, and St. John’s. And got into all four. when I spoke to my mom , she wasn’t even disappointed. She told me " everything happens for a reason." I chose hofstra , expensive. But at least I know I could work my way up. Thank you so much guys! I feel so much better.

Congratulations on all your acceptances! Good luck at Hofstra.

Please know that many incoming freshmen start down the “pre-med” track and are bowled over by the pace and difficulty of college level intro science courses. Please speak to your current science and math teachers about your career/college intentions and ask them for pointers how to not be one of those countless many who, after one semester, see their medical field dreams dashed. Your SAT and GPA don’t immediately paint you as someone who can grasp easily the complexity and volume of work necessary for an eventual medical career. Please arm yourself with all the tips and study habits you’ll need shortly. Good luck.

How much did each school cost?
Would your parents go into debt to help you pay for this school or do EOP/TAP/Pell cover it all?
Can you tell us, for each college
(tuition, fees, room&board) - (scholarships, grants) = …?

Thank you @austinmshauri‌ ! Means a lot. @T26E4‌ I would hate to be one of those students. But I am VERY serious, when it comes to something I am passionate about. I don’t believe my sat scores defines who I am. It isn’t the greatest, I know that, but I am willing to do whatever it takes to reach my desired goal. @MYOS1634‌ each school cost roughly about 36-39,000 without room & board. I did receive a 10,000 scholarship from both adelphi& hofstra. An a 12,000 scholarship from St. John’s. I haven’t received anything as yet from suny Oswego. I am eligible for ins coal aid because my mom doesn’t make to much. If I receive any more info, I will definitely get back to you!

I also love learning about diseases & self curing. Is pathology the right path to take? Or should I consider something else ? My strength is biology, & physics is my main weakness. If anyone has tips on where I should start, please feel free to share any advise.

Can you precisely tell us what your parents’ budget is ( the dollar amount they can pay out of pocket)
and list, for each college, not the amount of scholarship, but:
(tuition, fees, room&board) - (scholarships, grants) = …?

Are you taking AP bio? If not, can you get a textbook and start studying on your own (most students who make it past the first semester have already taken part of the class via AP bio and high school calculus, in order to keep their grades up.)

Premed doesn’t involve learning about diseases.
It involves: 2 semesters each of calculus, physics, biology, chemistry, orgo, English; and one semester each of sociology, psychology, biochemistry, and a diversity-focused class. In each of these classes you must rank in the top 10% or so of all students. It’s really really difficult, especially since you’ll be competing at first with students who already had the course, at least in part, through AP.

Your odds are better at a university where you’re in the top 25% of all applicants.

If you’re interested in learning about pathology, care, etc., you may want to look into nursing programs?

It sounds as if these schools aren’t very affordable.
There should still be time for you to apply to a few schools that may be more affordable?
What about SUNY Oneonta, SUNY New Paltz, CCNY, for public universities?
Through HEOP, you could apply to Hobart&William Smith and St Lawrence, they’ve got residential campuses, both are excellent for premed, more supportive than state universities - check the deadlines tonight and do it tomorrow if it’s still possible.

WOW!! Hofstra University Tuition is roughly $40K, minus the $10K in Scholarship, still looking at about $30K! Room & Board will run you another $12K. Are you planning on living on Campus for Fall & Spring? IMHO, you could get the same or better education at another SUNY Institution or even one of the CUNY College (CCNY, Queens/Hunter/Brooklyn College, etc.) I know CCNY have an excellent 7-year Biomedical / MD program and a lot of their undergraduate students go on to Medical Schools.

What was so attractive about Hofstra?

@rhyannag, Are you in state for NY schools? The maximum Pell grant is about $5k, the max NYS TAP grant is also about $5k, and you can take a federal student loan of $5500 for your freshman year. IF you qualify for full Pell and TAP, that gives you ~$15k to work with per year. How much can your mom contribute per year? If you’re close enough to commute to a SUNY (which run about $8k/year for tuition and fees), you could do that with Pell + TAP (if you qualify) or the federal student loan and summer work earnings.

Some of the SUNYs have rolling application deadlines, but want SAT scores in January. Check their website and/or visit your guidance counselor for specific deadlines.

@MYOS1634‌ I am taking AP bio, but I’m still conflicted as to what I want to do. I’m stuck in between Osteophathic medicine( internal medicine), and dietics. My mom is at least willing to take out 7,000. If it doesn’t work out, I can always transfer to stony after my first year. I’ll definetly check on a suny that is good for pre med. @Psata82‌ I’ve actually always wanted to go to hofstra lol. But you’re right, I can get a better education elsewhere. But I feel like it’s too late to apply to other schools. With Sophie Davis I think I have to write an essay, I’m not sure but I’ll check. And no I’m not planning on dorming, because I honestly can’t afford it. @austinmshauri‌ what suny do you recommend ? Sigh, my head feels jumbled

I think @mom2collegekids has a son in med school. She may know what majors are good for future med school students.

@rhyannag, Go to https://fafsa.ed.gov/ and fill out the FAFSA. As a NYS resident with an income less than $40k, you should qualify for Pell and TAP.

@MYOS1634, can OP start at a CUNY if she wants to go to med school later?

@austinmshauri‌ I submitted fafsa a week ago, and I did just that. I’m just waiting

can OP start at a CUNY if she wants to go to med school later?

Absolutely! The CUNY System is huge and very affordable. It appears the OP might live on Long Island or in Queens, NY (just a guess). A lot of CUNY graduates go on to Medical School each year, especially from their flagship College, CCNY. Queens/Brooklyn/Hunter College very also well respected within New York City. Tuition is about $3,015 per Semester or $6K per year.

OP, why not start at a Community College and then transfer to Stony Brook after year 1 or 2 years? That can be very cost effective and can be one pathway to medical school. You could also transfer to SUNY Downstate to one of their professional programs in case you change your mind about medicine.

My mom doesn’t believe in community colleges. So that’s one reason why I didn’t apply to cuny’s at all. She also believes there education system is horrible. But I’ll talk to her and hope she considers it as an option. At this point I feel absolutely stuck @Psata82‌
