@bubblepop12444 I read your comments on the UChicago ED II thread and I’m so very sorry you didn’t get in. That just sucks. You have superlative stats and an interesting essay topic.
Can you let us know about Wellesley this week- I’d be shocked if you were anything but accepted (hopefully with some merit).
Good luck to you!
@bubblepop12444 remembet, you make or break your college years. You can go to any college you want and be successful as long as you try really hard. The colleges that reject you are just missing out on a rlly cool dude.
Best of luck and remember to stay positive
I GOT INTO WELLESLEY! class of 2021
@bubblepop12444 congrats! No small feat. What are your thoughts - likely or no?
What a difference a day makes. Congrats!
So I wanted to chime in here because my D just received 4 rejections and a “waitlisted” response from the schools shes been aiting on for months. She wants to be a BFA MT major and we did everything we possibly could to help make that happen, including hiring a very expensive college admissions counselor (I don’t recommend -save your money and do your own research). Of the 11 schools she applied to, she only got into her 2 CSU safety schools (not BFA, just BA at one and undeclared for two years at the other until you are allowed to auditon end of sophomore year-not what she dreamed of), and one great school, but for film production. When she started this grueling process three years ago, she was also very into film making and video production, but had since narrowed down her passion to performance. This week has been the worst of her life-I am not being dramatic-she is devastated. The waitlisted school said the same thing to ger-don’t appeal, send in any achievements/awards you’ve gotten since applying. Seriously? Her gpa is above 3.8, her SAT is above 1260, and she’s been the lead in several shows, and has spent her whole life in musical theater procuctions. It’s been her passion since she was 2. We are now planning a campus tour at her safety acceptance, which she does NOT want to attend. It also happens to be my alma mater, so I am also very upset about this whole process because she’s devastated, we are crushed, and I don’t get to share in the excitement of my daughter attending my school because she had dreams of attending Boston conservatory, NYU Tisch, CMU, USC…we have one more school notification coming from The hartt school, but the way this week has gone, I’m not holding out a lot of hope. She (and we) share in your devastation.
@Clkantz that DOES suck! Big time. MT is probably the hardest BFA program to get into.
By any chance did she try for Columbia College in Chicago? I know it’s not direct admit to their theater major (at least it wasn’t a few years ago when my D16 was looking into BFA programs). But it did seem to have a decent program. My D16 is art/design NOT MT but she did a LOT of MT in HS and we were looking at all options at one point (creative writing, visual arts, performance, you name it). Hard with these user-talented kids. It’s a real challenge helping them keep their spirits up during the admissions, auditions, etc. Fortunately, it’s great preparation for the career!
Thanks, and no, she didn’t apply to Chicago. We know that this is par for the course with this career choice, but she’d like to be able to have it as a career choice first. We are hearing a lot about how the schools look for a fat resume over grades (would’ve been REALLY helpful to know that a few years ago), and are even being told that many BFA MT students getting in arectuallycceptedre already somewhat accomplished. I thought college was supposed to help with that?! A bunch of our friend’s kids got rejected from their schools, so many that we are wondering who is are actually getting accepted? This is an awful process, and SO hard to hear other parents talk about their kids 3 or 4 acceptances, while we are mourning for our daughter’s defeats, and trying to pick up the pieces arectuallycceptedre rejections make the best of it.
@Clkantz, we are going through a similar experience with our twin DD’s who worked like crazy for years to put themselves in position to have a shot at one of their reach schools (superscore 35/single sitting 34 ACT, multiple 750-800 SAT Subject Tests, 3.8 UW/4.2 W GPA, lots of EC’s), and while they have great choices with acceptances at Bates, Carleton, Colby, Colgate, Hamilton, Kenyon, and Oberlin and were waitlisted at Middlebury, Notre Dame and Wesleyan, they were denied at almost every reach school they applied to - 7 denials in all.
While they knew what reach meant, to not get admitted to any of them hurt them a lot. That said, we are proud of what they’ve accomplished, and they’ll feel that way soon as well.
I continue to read that acceptance rates are plummeting as applications increase, but seats in the colleges don’t - so much so that a mid-teens acceptance rate is becoming the norm at top-10-25 universities and LAC’s, not just the top-10’s.
it’s getting really tough for kids to keep the flame burning.
Sounds like it’s something completely out of the control of the applicant! Your take on the purpose of college in giving you the high-level training is spot on. If they are ALREADY accomplished, what will they be in 4 years but already accomplished? No change there! Sounds like it’s pure connections etc.
We had a friend who’s kid DID get into CMU (not for MT for for something technical) but was rejected from all her top choices - in fact, most of her choices. She simply didn’t want to attend CMU. Her mom took her to Pittsburgh, stayed in a great hotel, really showed her around. Kid matriculated - reluctantly - and NOW she loves it. Every school - including the CSU’s which are actually very well connected! - is going to have advantages and most who matriculate end up loving where they are at. So there is hope!
Also, I realize this isn’t what your daughter currently wants, but getting into a top film program is no small accomplishment. So it’s not all about defeat here. She might be able to matriculate and change her major? Or decide she wants to do film? You never know. They are still young. A bachelors program is broad for a reason.
Good luck to her!
@chembiodad It really is. This is why there are so many kids with anxiety and depression. Congratulations on your twin daughter’s acceptances. Those are wonderful schools!
@Clkantz, thx as Thursday was tough as the denials rolled in one after another. Agree, they did end up with wonderful choices.
Wishing that all our kids next Fall will look back at how crazy the whole process was and look forward to the next journey in their lives with the same passion that got them to where they are today.
why are we topic hijacking?
