In both admission, academic, and social aspects, would it be better to apply as a repeat sophomore or junior? Repeat sophs and new juniors, please share your experiences!

Admission: There is typically a higher acceptance rate for sophomores vs. juniors.

Academics: Repeating gives you an extra transition year before junior year (aka: the most important school year for colleges).

Social Aspects: I couldn’t really tell you this, as I don’t attend any boarding school but from the students I have talked to they say that many people decide to repeat and you won’t be alone. It is probably socially accepted amongst other peers if the school you attend has a lot of repeaters. On the other hand, you may get annoyed that you will be older that other students but at most schools there is a great diversity amongst ages in each grade.

My personal opinion would be to apply as a repeater but everyone has different views. Did you ask your parents what they think?

Ask at some schools if you are allowed to mark the 10th grade and 11th grade box on the application so you can be considered for both grades. If they don’t have enough room for juniors then you could still have the possibility of being accepted as a 10th grader.

I’m pretty sure I’m going to repeat, but I’m just not sure. I don’t know if I want to wait a whole extra before college, you know? What grade are you applying for, 2010?

I am applying as a repeat unless my parents force me otherwise. I could really care less about the extra year before college. Going to one of these schools is basically like going to college early (in some aspects).

I say apply as a junior. Why one earth would you want to spend more time high school?

i applied as a junior, i think it’s not worth it to spend an extra year.

Some thoughts for you to take into consideration:

Junior year is the most challenging academic year of high school, and the most important for college applications.

The transition to BS, particularly from less rigorous schools, is often difficult and challenging.

Friends of my D who came as new Juniors from strong academic private schools did fine with the transition. Those coming from less rigorous programs often struggled. Repeat sophomores are common. So I think your decision to repeat or not should depend on how rigorous your first two years of high school have been. Socailly it doesn’t matter.
