alright, so, fortunately I came across the one msall box on the Pathways application site that mentions that No freshman classes are considered honors, nor 10th garde english, nor World History (except AP of course) ...even if they were in your own school. As I self reported my grades on the application, I just cited these courses as NH (Non Honors.) I don't think it specifically says to report them as non honors, just that they won't be considered honors. I understand this and that's fine, but I want them to at least know that I went for the honors level, the highest level, at those points. Should I list them as honors so they know that (because they dont ask for a transcript in addition)? Or should I leave them as they are, even if my peers put them down as honors and risk losing a spot to them? I know our UC gpas will be calculated the same way, but anything that helps me is welcome. What do you guys think?

My d had the same question last year
We asked q's at ucsd and uc berkeley admissions presentations, and this is what we heard:

Look at your high school's A-G course list, and if those honors courses are certified honors by the UC, they will be noted with an "H" on that list in the 3rd column. Thats the list that determines honors status, not your transcript. If you took a class on that list certified as honors in 9th grade (honors biology may be possible for example or if you are a math wiz and had precalc as a 9th grader), yes, mark it as honors. Each high school submits a list of courses to the UC each spring and only the UC certifies honors status.

Don't worry about it hurting you that you took uncertified honor classes. Its okay. Each campus has standardized how it looks at these--in the UC catalog each campus is publishing the number of honors/ap/college courses taken in grades 10-12, so noone is getting ahead of you in the admissions process.

One thing some kids miss in the fine print: if you took algebra or geometry in 7th or 8th grade, or if you took foreign language, make sure those are added to the your UC pathways app course list. The grades don't count (like 9th grade and 12th grade don't) but the college prep course semesters do, as those are looked at from 9-12, and the above middle school courses also count. This is also a stat that each campus is looking at: the number of semesters of college prep courses taken (defined as courses which are on your high school's A-G UC course list).
