We received the advertisement for ordering bedding, etc…through the Residence Hall Association and the deal seemed pretty good to me…

We’re headed from OOS and had planned to take a day to shop prior to early move-in but it does seem pretty nice to have the necessities bundled…What do you think? I’m not sure we could buy all the items for the price offered…not sure of quality…

Students? My son isn’t fussy and not planning to ‘decorate.’ He would disown me if I tried slip covers :)

The prices are quite reasonable and if you aren’t that keen on looking for sale merchandise, it might be a good option for you. On an earlier thread, we had a rep post saying that they were improving the quality of their products.

With a little know-how, you could pick out stuff for the price of the bundle pack or less on your own. This way, you will know in advance exactly what quality of products you are getting and are able to mix and match what your son wants for his room. This may involve going to multiple stores to get exactly what he wants, like certain pillows or something UA-themed.

If you will have the room to pack bedding in your suitcases, you can start now. I was just in Marshall’s the other day and they have started to get in twin-xl bedding with more to come towards the end of the month early July, as is the case with other stores.

If you do choose to shop on your own for things, remember that The Tuscaloosa Target and Wal-Mart will be packed. There are other locations of each between the Airport and Tuscaloosa that may have a less picked-over selection. Wal-Mart is exit 108 on I20/59 and a Target and Ross are at exit 1 off of I-459 (I-459 is exit 106 on I20/59 IIRC).

As a reminder, some crimson-colored linens have a tendency to bleed. Watch out for that.

Sea - tide, as always thanks. I’m the world’s worst shopper…don’t like stores, don’t like crowds, etc…and I’ll use catalogs happily but I put it all aside if my cub wants something I have actually bought a couple of towels, etc… but when I saw these ‘bundles’, well, I thought they were a pretty good deal. Thanks again, and RTR

P.S. I know this had been discussed earlier and I apologize for the repetition. Sometimes I don’t recall exact discussions or outcomes… unless it is pertinent to the current activity !

Student: You might also consider using JC Penney. The online store will have its dorm collection stuff up soon. The quality for XL sheets is good. So is the price. You also could pick up your son’s towels, blankets, etc. there and have it all shipped to Alabama. My nephew just graduated from HS last weekend. I gave him a plastic storage tub filled with towels, sheets, blankets, a laundry bag, some school supplies and two, new polos. He loved the gift. I got most of it through JCP.

As for sending things, I would think that you could do it about a week or so before. I sent everything via USPS last year. My son and his kids brother picked everything up the day he checked in for Alabama Action. Check with USPS about the timing.

I’ve picked up inexpensive towels at KMart when they’re on sale. They don’t match exactly, all light blue, but who cares, lots will get lost in the dryer. Just couldn’t pass by a bath towel for three bucks. And not thread bare, either.

Oh, yes, love my Kmart.

Now, about this egg crate mattress. How many kids get those? I think of those more for nursing homes, but I did see them listed in the linen package flyers we got from different colleges.

I don’t have an egg crate mattress as I have a quality mattress pad that I bought during an excellent sale at Macy’s. Many parents on CC have recommended buying a memory foam topper on Overstock so if your student likes memory foam, that may be a good idea.

If you already have a PO Box, the people there are really good about holding mailed items until you arrive and the package delivery center will just put your packages on one of their shelves until you pick them up.

Mom, thanks for the link for the memory foam topper. I am not familiar with this item, only the egg crates because of elderly parents, so good to know there is something available for the younger set to get a comfortable rest.

Now, this link is to a twin. Should we get Twin XL, or is regular Twin sufficient?

I’ve never seen a Twin XL anywhere…but maybe there are some.

My kids have just used the reg twin ones on top of their school mattresses. They’ve never had a problem. If there was, an extra pillow at the top would likely fill any shortness in length.

A quick check of Overstock shows that they have a few reasonably-priced (under $80) Twin-XL memory foam toppers. I know that a flat sheet and blankets don’t have to be a Twin-XL and the other stuff should also work if the material stretches. Speaking as somebody who is 6’1", the extra 5 inches in length provided by a Twin-XL is very appreciated.
