i am very worried about the status of my acceptance to Wash U once they receive my final transcript. due to various circumstances, including severe anxiety (that cycled into insomnia and illness and back again) and also a teacher who, despite proclaiming her acceptance of late work and a complete lack of warning otherwise, would not accept my (very) late work. because of this, i was given a F in this one core class. normally it would prevent me from graduating, but due to an extra credit, i will be able to graduate. i really, really do not want to be kicked out of Wash U though. My grades for the semester are the F, and A-, and 4 B-'s. My first semester gpa was a 3.5, and high school cumulative was 3.7. i will contact Wash U after speaking to my college counselor. anyone have any insight?

F is a big deal; you’re in a deep hole. G luck.

Yes, contact Wash U’s admission office and explain your situation. They’ll appreciate your honesty and the fact that you’re willing to take a proactive role. Offer to be placed on academic probation and ask your counselor or a teacher to vouch for the academic talents that got you in in the first place. An F may be a problem but it doesn’t necessarily mean automatic rescinding, so do all you can.

Not sure if anxiety is a good excuse, unless you could show you have seek help and it is under control. Any issue you may have to prevent you from having a successful college experience would not be looked at favorably.

thanks for your replies.

@Ren the SAT’er: yes, i know x_x
@bluebubbles: thanks for that, i definitely will be contacting them.
@oldfort: i agree that they might not consider it a good enough excuse. i will try to figure out what to say, although i don’t want to lie

assuming all your other grades havent dropped significantly, i wouldnt be too nervous. i would though 100% contact the school about the F. you will probably get on academic probation or something, but with 4 B-'s and 1 A, it seems like your other grades are fine. WashU is a good school (congrats btw) and probably are very wary about kids with D’s and F’s, but if you explain your situation im sure you will be ok. good luck

thanks, pwnies. academic probation would be fine, much better than recission. i just have to figure out the right things to say to them.

no problem. i am going through sort of the same thing, but im just trying to keep my grades up. if i were you, i wouldnt blame it on a teacher because your work was late so its technically your fault. take responsibility and look mature because the last thing a college wants is someone whos going to shove the blame on a teacher. good luck, be positive and everything will be ok

Did you at any point see a professional about your anxiety/“insomnia”? Or were you just kind of feeling nervous and not really getting sleep? Insomnia is a diagnosable disorder, as is generalized anxiety etc. If you had a serious psychological problem and a professional can vouch for you, then you’re probably set…

hey sugar magnolia,
no i haven’t yet. i just really wanted to avoid it and hoped it would go away. i plan to do that soon, though. hopefully that will help. i think i probably have generalized anxiety, but not really insomnia, that’s just an effect.

Don’t worry about WashU at this point… just get better. But if there is something wrong that’s beyond your control (i.e. disorder) then definitely have someone let WashU know. An illness is an illness.

What subject is the F in ? Are these final grades or semester/mid year grades ? My d received a D as a midterm grade in Calc III, and did not get rescinded by WashU.

Do you have a plan for bringing up your grade(s) ?

Depending on how long the anxiety/insominia has been going on, it does not feel good that “you hoped it would go away”

Unless it is situation based and limited in time, stuff like that needs to be dealt with before it gets big and before you have consequences (like you have)

If you can talk about a lesson learned when you tell Wash U, that might help. And one potential lesson to learn is to ask for help before stuff spirals out of control.

Yes F is problematic. Calling is necessary.
