Research Science Institute 2006

you never know
the only way you'd know your chance was if you were, oh i don't know, a siemens westinghouse regional finalist and then won your regional competition
coughbtw,wthcough is an intellectualcoughpropertycoughlawyercough
wow, i have a really bad cold

wait, who's an intellectual property lawyer?

the guy from our state wants to be an intellectual property lawyer, haha, read his SW thing

hmm that wasn't very smooth, hope that person's not reading this

bigcow - are you a US citizen/PR? if not you won't be able to apply as a domestic... just checking. anyway RSI will probably take your distinctive situation into consideration, and there's no harm trying for it. =)

Yeah guys, feel free to include a letter or something explaining your situation if you feel its necessary. CEE really really wants the best students, even more so than any university (which would use AA, etc.).

thanks for your advice.
i'm a US citizen. but this is my first year living here.
so i think i wont be discouraged. ill be doing a lot of things this year.

and u r right, even there's no opportinity, if you really have passion i hav to make my one.
but its not always like that, even you hav a passion for it your environment has a great effect on u. if you live in a place with no intellectual drive or any talk about these things, you won't know what to do. and although i'm a us citizen i didn't start speakin english till 8th grade. i'm glad i found this site on my junior year.

anyway thanks ppl.

Ok here's the deal. A kid from my school got into RSI last year(he has mentioned that i'm not to mention his name[We're at a boarding school] :p).

I think I am taking harder classes than he did. However, I'm not making straight A's here(as opposed to my old school).

I'm toppling between an A-/B+ in AP Chem and AP Physics C. However, because we run on trimesters, and all my current classes run 2 or 3 timresters, none of the grades I get first trimester will be on my transcript. Should I include them? I don't have to, but I don't want them to think I'm hiding something(I am :p).

I'm really banking on my essays. I did a lot of research that I submitted to Siemens Westinghouse, independent of any professional lab(ie, in my home desk) in CS, and now I'm establishing contacts at local Uni's(Duke, UNC-CH). I also do a lot of independent projects(Chess Engine, human-computer interfacing via a webcam(I'm using a webcam to detect someone standing away from the computer, pointing at the screen, and the mouse follow's, and w/ a jabbing motion, you can click)), and am taking one of the hardest courseloads here. I also did an internship at UNC-Charlotte, but that was not related to my Siemens Project.

Should I include a letter explaining that "I live at boarding school?" I know its not an excuse, but the expectations are different here, since you have access to everything 24/7.

They'll know. You go to a famous school.

Hmmm... how do you know? A lot of colleges out of states(besides like MIT, and some east coast colleges) are like *** is your school?

Oh, and what is your opinion on sending in grades? I know that this trimester grades aren't representative of what I can do. In physics the class is like 90% seniors.

there are "famous schools"?

sure, some boarding schools are famous (Andover, etc.)
I've heard of the school sagar is from but I didn't know it was very well-known.
Sounds nice, though, I've always wanted to go to boarding school.
clingy parents

Yeah, NCSMS (?) is well-known, i think.
along with the NE boarding schools
and other math/science schools (TJ, AAST, IMSA)...

About the grades, report if you get an A, if not don't.

Hmmm... what if I get an A in some subjects, and perhaps not in some? Should I send a letter saying that grades are not official until after second trimester?

If you're going to send it grades, either send them or don't - don't try to equivocate and hedge your bets. If you think your grades will bolster your application, feel free to send 'em in. If you think that some of your grades are gonna look bad, don't send them in. But don't send in a transcript and ask CEE to only look at some of the grades, or to ignore the grades that aren't A's (assuming they'll improve) and only look at the grades that are A's.

Well... my transcript will have my freshmen and sophomore year grades, etc, and this years classes, but not grades. So my GC said that I should prolly send in some kind of note w/ my grades from first trimester on them. The kid who went last year did send in his grades.

Gunload, read my livejournal. Thanks :)

The survey is released on '04 rickoids college decisions; only 54 out of approximately 75 US rickoids replied. Some didn't do the survey, but here's what I got so far for the early rounds in college admission:

Stanford: 3 Acceptances
MIT: 16 Acceptances and 1 Deferral
Chicago: 1 Acceptances
Caltech: 3 Acceptances
Princeton: 1 Acceptances
Harvard: 24 Acceptances and 9 Deferrals
