Sorry, that was cruel. But sometimes it's the easiest way to put things into perspective.

Notre Dame has one of the best Residence Life systems in the country. I have not met a person who actively dislikes their dorm in every way. A lot of people disagree with things, or complain about fines, etc, but no one I know has found their dorm to be anything less than a great community. And, because of that, all the positives flow out from that - male bonding, fun, and support.

That being said, I know Knott has very good interhall sports, especially football, and they have a very large fanbase. They also have volleyball courts in their backyard, which is nice. That being said, the dorm is not really that old, especially as a male dorm (it was a female dorm when Grace and Flanner were still dorms), so it may be slightly lacking in tradition and such, but it makes up for it with large rooms and air conditioning.

We are from NY, 5 boroughs- not upstate. No info from your son is a 'guy' thing I believe! I have a daughter entering her 3rd yr at Georgetown and she makes up for it. I get more info then needed at times...lol. I believe my son is on the 4th floor- talk about no info- he hasn't given me exact room just 'I think it's 4 something'. They are probaby excited, just don't show it.

NDalum- I have no ND study abroad experience- but I do have experience in general. My daughter studied in Tours, France. What an exceptional learning experience. If you can have your son go he should, even for a summer program if possible. The experience is so worth it!

NDAL, thanks for your well wishes. With about half as many class hours in Dublin as I have in South Bend, I'm sure to have time to waste. I've been on here for 3 years, I don't see myself leaving any time soon, and it'll be nice to keep in touch.

My son just told me that he THINKS he is on 4th floor as well.
He certainly does not tell me a thing, and either does his younger brother. It really can be extremely frustrating. I have no girls to chat with!

kevdude-
thanks for the info about the interhall football, exactly the info I am looking for! He will be really excited about that. By the way, I was in college many many years ago and even in the olden days it was easy to get beer into dorms and the RA's turned their heads. I most certainly am not naive. I wish I was most days.

suesam-I can tell you that last year during Frosh O, we saw the Knott hall guys running around campus, (very late) cheering for their hall! The Freshmen were made to stop at the dome and sing the fight song too... It looked pretty cool and like they were having a great time. They also seemed really spirited at a pep rally we went to.

Keenan hosts a great group of guys, but let's just say it was built during a time when Notre Dame wasn't so generous with where its money was spent.

I live in PW (one of our side doors is several feet from one of Knott's side doors) and most of my best guy friends live in Knott and they absolutely love it! I know Knott's president who served both last year and will again this year -- and he is so intense about Knott spirit that he basically singlehandedly won Knott Hall of the Year last year. He did this by planning tons of academic, spiritual, and social events both in-dorm and with other dorms. You can always spot Knott guys at pep rallies and other events like that with their bright orange shirts and bright orange beanies. Last year, their dorm signature events included "A Rodeo and What-Knott" (mechanical bulls, Texas chili, pie-eating contest, music, hosted a game watch for the Penn State game) and "Knott on the Knoll" (free food and different bands played). Their rector Brother Jerome, known to everyone as BroJo, is quite old and very out-of-it, so to speak, so you shouldn't have too many problems with strictness, though things never really get out of hand there either. The dorm itself is very nice, built in 1988, gorgeous chapel, has air conditioning, rooms known as being slightly bigger than those in older dorms, identical floorplans as the other Mod Quad dorms. The location is pretty good, located right by the library, North Dining Hall (the superior one), Rolf's Recreation Center, Jordan Hall of Science, and the JACC, and all other buildings are within a ten minute walk away at the most (like the bookstore -- we're pretty far from that). All in all, definitely a great dorm; one of my best friends will be on Frosh-O staff for Knott for the second year in a row so I can ask him any more questions if you have any. Oh, and since Knott won Hall of the Year last year, your sons will get to go to a Dome Dance this year!

Happygirl-
Good morning and THANK YOU for your response. I have a daughter in college already so I don't need to hear how easy it is to drink in a dorm and how college kids like to party rather then study. I have heard it all...lol. I also went to college myself ;) But your post added the insight on Knott I was hoping for (leave it to a female!). I appreciate your response. Knott Hall seems like a great place to live. Indiana is not around the corner from NYC, so it was nice to hear some 'fun' stories about life at Knott - my son's new 'home'. I appreciate your post.

Guys, as a rule, generally know/care very little about other dorms. Also, forums, as a rule, make people seem much more cold and aloof than they actually are. So for that, I apologize, for, you know... seeming cold and aloof.

to the moms asking about Knott- I was a freshman in PW last year and can vouch that knott is a good dorm. i'm probably biased because they're my neighbors, but my friends and i generally found the knott guys to be some of the nicest on campus. one of my good friends will be an RA there next year, and he's great as well. your sons are joining a great group of guys.

Thank you everyone! I really do appreciate the information! We moms just worry you know, it is our job. I am not sharing this information with him, he can find it himself! I am not telling him how easy it is to get beer, duh!

I have to find out all I can from these forums because my son will NEVER tell me any of this. He is just not the chatting type so I have to do my own research if I want to find out anything!

Happygirl837 and Irishcali ~ thanks for the info, exactly what I want to know about!
BTW, what is a Dome Dance?

kevdude~ No problem..... I am used to that kind of male behavior, I live with 2 teenage males who are both cold and aloof! Hurts my feelings but hey I have toughened up.

JCool and Kevdude-
I too agree, but not to worry it's just an interested mom, my son is never on CC. Now him being on facebook is another story ;)... but I am banned from that site..lol!
Thanks for all your help everyone!! I wish you all a restful remainder of the summer and a great school year! GO Irish (& Hoyas) lol...couldn't resist
