Residence Halls at W&M

I was accepted as a Transfer Student for Spring 2006 with a Junior Standing.

I need to fill out the on-campus housing form and it asks for residence hall preference. I took a look on the WM website but the information isn't very clear about the differences. I know housing mid-year will be limited but I figure I might as well request the best possible hall/house.

Can anyone give me any suggestions? Are all dorms equal or are some newer/cleaner, better located than others?

I appreciate any assistance.

the reslife website, www.wm.edu/reslife/ should give the location of each dorm, the room sizes, style of baths (hall/suite) etc. I'd suggest trying to get a dorm with AC.

Old Dominon and Bryan Complex are popular with upper classmen. Doubtful you could get a Randolph Apartment or Ludwell.

what is the best freshman dorm in terms of freshman activities and facilities???

Dupont is the best freshmen dorm, followed by Yates.

They're far from old campus (and further from the bookstore), but that's the price you pay to live near the newly redone dining hall, have AC, have bigger rooms, and the chance to walk by the gross swamp pit daily =P

Just don't get stuck out in hurting Old Campus like Soccerguy and I were...

The roaches are smarter in Monroe.

Roaches!!? Joking, yes?

sorry to change topics but what are the different scholarships W&M offers

beat,

roaches are just protein. You'll probably encounter a couple no matter where you live over the year. We had a couple monster ones in Taliaferro last year. Keep your food closed, keep your room clean, and you'll be ok.

as far as scholarships... don't know of many. I know there's the College Scholars, which goes to like a handful of people (there were 4 my freshmen year). There's also the Monroe scholars, but that money is for research.

What's wrong with the old campus?

nothing is wrong with old campus. The nicer dorms are on New Campus. Taliaferro was built in the 1930s. The rooms are small, and the dorm as a whole is small (49 freshmen). Old campus dorms are closer to the Sunken Gardens, old campus classes, the Marketplace which is generally the least crowded dining hall, a short walk to the UC, closer to Wawa, closer to the bookstore, and you get to avoid the swamp pit.

Swamp Pit??

you mean they didn't take you there on the tour? lol

down the hill behind Yates, and behind the health center, there's a large pit that sometimes has a bad smell. When it rains a lot, it fills up with water. It's basically a drainage thing, I believe.

It's the one bad spot on campus.

Taliaferro also had a bit of an ant problem last year. However, to offset this you get to do what I did and eat those delicious Marketplace sammiches every M/W/F for a god damn year.

my student guide actually told me that in her freshman year she was in taliaferro and said that the extremely small size was a big plus. she knew everyone and pretty much told our group that if we got stuck with it, we shouldnt be too disappointed? something along those lines. even went as far as to recommend it, kinda. crazy, i know--after hearing all these things about ants and roaches.

Is housing assigned randomly?

They let you rank the dorms from your highest preference to your lowest.

That being said, it doesn't really seem like too much stock is put into those rankings. I would say that for all intents and purposes, Freshman housing is fairly random.

Are all freshman put in freshman dorms?

yes, all freshmen live only with freshmen

in 05-06 Jefferson was split half and half, but that doesn't happen anymore, and it was only for one year.

Bryan Complex is popular with upperclassmen, but now I think that honor prob goes to Jamestown N and S. Ludwell is just off campus, but is popular, and Randolph is nice but hard to get in terms of the lottery.
