I'm a high school senior and already applied to FSU. Although the decision is out on December 14th I want to start looking into the whole halls and dorm situation. I want to know mainly what students think of the different halls like Gilchrist, Cawthon ect If anyone has any information on the halls and dorms please helppp:)) (I qualify for FSU honors so if anyone has any information on Landis it would be greatly appreciated as well:) )

If you are accepted into the Honors Program I would suggest Living in landis. Overall the Suite-Style dorms tend to be nicer whereas the Community style dorms tend to be more social. All in all it does pertain to your preference but keep in mind that halls like cawthon are only for LLC people and only open if they did not fill their spots.

Yeah, hopefully if I go for Cawthon I’ll get a spot. I’m planning to applying for housing quickly, if I do decide to go, but I’ve heard that priority numbers go up immediately. And as for preference, I don’t really mind loud halls with people that stay p late. I actually prefer that. I just don’t want a dorm where everything is very uptight and such. I don’t know how much sense that made but yeah. Haha, anyways, thank you for the answerrr :)

That’s not entirely true about the LLC halls. A lot of them have some floors for anybody. I lived in Cawthon freshman year, and was not part of WIMSE (obviously) or the Music LLC. The 0 and 1 floors were all people with high priorities or sophomores.

I personally think Cawthon is the best hall on campus (if you don’t mind purchasing a meal scam). It’s right on Landis Green, most central of the east side halls, right next to Strozier Library, 3 minutes from Suwannee, building has a lot of character, rooms are a decent size, etc. If the residence halls were put on a monopoly game, Cawthon would be on board walk.

@ Matt125-
Since you appear knowledgeable regarding the dorms,
could you please list in order the best overall dorm for
freshman and why ! THANKS !

PLEASE be honest, as your choices may also be mine.

^I wanna know too

That completely depends on the type of experience you are expecting.

Suite Style
[ul]
[]600+ dollars more per semester than Smith
[]Larger rooms, but size varies for the renovated East Side
[]Share a bathroom typically with 3 others. You don’t have to walk down the hall.
[]Nicer on the inside
[]Once you’ve seen Wildwood, you’ve seen Degraff
[]Once you’ve seen one renovated east side hall, you’ve seen them all
[li]All require meal plans with the exception of Wildwood, Degraff, and Salley[/li][/ul]

Landis (Honors students only. I’ve never seen a room, but I’d imagine if you get into Landis, you should take it)

Cawthon (see above)

Wildwood (10 minute walk to dining halls, located very close to the Leach Center (gymnasium) and the football stadium, and doesn’t require a meal plan)

Any other East Side Renovated Hall

Degraff (Location is slightly off campus, and you need to walk through a small tunnel to get to campus. Meal plan not required. Closer to Suwannee than Wildwood is to either Fresh Food or Suwannee. It is also right next to the Strip and a McDonalds if that’s something that would factor into your decision.)

Salley (200 dollars cheaper than the above, and an entirely different set up). The main reason this hall is cheaper is because it’s not renovated, so not quite as nice on the inside. You get a decent sized common area with 4 desks and internet connection, the largest suite style bathrooms offered on campus, but share a bedroom that’s extremely small. The beds come bunked, and most leave them that way. You can unbunk them, but space in the bedroom will become very limited. That said, you typically don’t spend time in the bedroom, because studying and what not would happen in the common area. It’s good because your roommate can sleep in the dark while you study in the common area, and vice versa. Many people actually find Salley to be the best hall on campus, but like I said, it’s not quite as nice as the others on the inside.

Community
[ul]
[]500-600+ dollars cheaper per semester than the main suite style halls
[]Smaller rooms
[]Share a bathroom of 3-4 shower stalls and 3-4 toilet stalls with 22-30 residents.
[]Not quite as nice on the inside
[]Bathrooms are cleaned on a nearly regular basis, making the bathroom situation better than suite style if you have messy roommates or never clean your own bathroom.
[]Diviney has carpeted rooms, but I’ve never lived or been inside Diviney or Dorman, so my knowledge is limited.
[]Smith and Kellum are very social; far more so than the suite style halls. You will make a lot of friends if you live here.
[]Not nearly as bad as their reputation.
[li]None require a mealplan[/li][/ul]

Smith (Cheapest)

Kellum (West side parking situation > East side parking situation)

Diviney

Dorman

If you have any other questions, I will try to answer them as best as possible. If I were signing up for halls as a freshman knowing what I know now, I’d go:

Cawthon/Wildwood

Cawthon/Wildwood (Indifference is because I prefer Cawthon, but like that Wildwood doesn’t require a mealplan)

Gilchrist (it’s honors spillover, so it’s tough to get into if you’re not honors)

Degraff (not a fan of the slightly off campus location, but it’s nice/new and doesn’t require a meal plan)

That helped a lot ^^. Thank you sooo much!

I love you…
