I am really confused about resnet subscription. For one, is Resnet necessary to receive wireless internet in your dorm room? Also, for those of you who have subscribed to Resnet, what tier of bandwidth would you recommend signing up for?

No resnet is not necessary to get wireless internet in your dorm. If you live in San Jac, you probably won't get wireless at all. If you live in Jester you could hypothetically not get Resnet at all but you would be limited to the 500 mb basic allocation they give everyone. I had 15 gigs but I downloaded a lot, and I did run out 4 or 5 weeks, but as things got rolling, I got used to it. I ended up budgeting my bandwidth, though it was hardly budgeting, I just couldn't download a lot of TV shows in a week, but rather I just spread it out. It is pretty expensive for the higher bandwidth packages, I'd say if you are a basic internet user with no gaming or downloading 5 should be enough, some downloading and a lot of online video watching should warrant 10. Then kinda go up there. I could have used 20 gigs but 15 was fine for me, and I download a lot.

I have a fiber connection at home so I'm used to high bandwidth. Went to UT and didn't use anymore than 4GB a week so that's the plan I'm getting this year. Also of note, they don't charge for in network traffic and there are a number of servers located on campus that are incredibly fast. Great for TV shows, etc.

Disclaimer: I normally do not download warez, movies, etc.

Remember though, all bandwidth caps are weekly.

Thanks a bunch. I think that I will just get the 4GB bandwidth and upgrade it later if I need to.
