Resume - Amherst Admissions

Hi --

Question on resumes; my son's counselor is recommending one to go with the Common App.

Does inclusion of a resume at a highly selective school like Amherst make any difference ... or do the admissions people see these as fluff and disregard them?

You will get different views on this. Personal view is that they are unnecessary and and have no impact unless you are providing something in it that is both (a) mentioned nowhere in your application materials, and (b) is so outstanding it needs to be mentioned; of course that is what essays can be used for rather than doing a resume. Also there are many colleges, e.g., Stanford, which state they do not want things not requested such as resumes. Amherst does not appear to provide a policy one way or the other.
