Resume/CV - what experiences should I get?

Good grades, high GRE, similar/relevant work experience - what else is useful on a CV?

I’m a jack of all trades, I don’t mind getting into new topics; just need to know what’s going to help!

Additionally, a more specific question: I’ve authored a few books and I do web dev - should I add my books and programming experience, even if they’re not related to my major?

Thanks!

For clarity, what do you intend to use this resume or CV for? Are you in high school or college?

Also, test scores NEVER belong on a resume or CV.

Oh, thanks for pointing out about scores!

And for grad school application

Bump

Grad school is vague. If you are applying for a science PhD program, they would look for vastly different things than if you are applying for an MBA or for a master’s in data analytics.

From a science PhD standpoint, they would look for things like:

  • lab research experience, including outputs like publications, posters, talks, etc.
  • awards and honors, especially academic or related to research
  • science outreach and volunteering
  • teaching experience (of science or math courses ideally)
  • lab skills
  • computer skills and programming skills
  • memberships in science honor societies and relevant trade organizations for target science fields
  • attendance at/participation in science conferences and workshops
  • languages and study abroad
  • demonstrated interest and aptitude in topic/field you plan to research and study for your PhD
  • writing skills
  • other types of research besides lab research
  • statistical analysis and data visualization skills

Without knowing more about what your CV is for, it isn’t possible to give you specific advice. But a “jack of all trades” is probably the opposite of what any graduate program will be looking for in an applicant. Graduate programs are usually looking for people who want to narrow down their focus to something specific, and who reflect that they are ready to do that in their application materials.

Psy.D

I didn’t specify because I wondered what experiences apply to all degrees; sounds like I was going about it the wrong way.

Here is a sample CV with explanations of what your type of program will be looking for.

Here is more information from the American Psychological Association:
http://www.apa.org/gradpsych/2015/01/curriculum-vitae.aspx

It gives an explanation, and then has this vitae checklist:

Name and contact information, including work and home phone numbers, address and email.
Education, including college degrees, places and dates.
Dissertation topic.
Licenses/certifications, including state and certificate number, if applicable.
Internships.
Professional experience.
Publications.
Professional or academic presentations.
Honors, scholarships, fellowships or awards.
Professional organization memberships.
Volunteer or service work.
Teaching, research or clinical experience.
