What are you guys doing for your college resumes? I've been told that I can only have 1 pg for my resume. Is this true? Do I list stuff on both my resume and on the common app? How do you guys do this? I have no idea so any help anyone can give would be great.

One page? I didn't know that. I explained all my activities thoroughly...

some colleges specifically state not to send in any additional info. Or they tell you to list any additional info on a specified section of the application

anyone else?

could anyone who's already applied send me what theirs looked like?

aquamarine how did you format yours? did you also write everything on the app and then again on the resume?

mets07, do not repeat on the resume that which is already on the application. No grades, no scores, no rank, no GPA. If you can get everything on the application, don't send a resume at all. Make sure that what's on the resume is not a laundry list, but contains only important things. Don't explain things that are self-explanatory (like "Treasurer, Senior Class").

Send a resume only if it tells the reader something that's not clear from the rest of the application.

Can we send a list Explaining what we did for each of the activities on our Activity List and also awards and leadership type things for each?

That's what I'm doing. Better to be more thorough I think...

You don't usually need to send a resume.

You can explain activities in the "additional information" section of an application, or whatever its equivalent may be.

If you are sending a resume, keep it short. A resume should not be more than one page long; it's supposed to be brief, short, and concise.

I just did mine in an outline format, so it just seems to be long. If I got rid of that format, it'd be around 1.5 pages probably. I have a lot to put, so I don't know how I'd explain all of that in 1 page...

You cannot possibly have that much to list. You're in high school.

The point of a resume isn't to list every single activity or event you've taken part in; I have no doubt that you could fill several pages with that.

The point of a resume is to highlight only the most important things you've done, and present them in a brief, concise manner.

Well, how do I make it that concise? I used an outline format and described each in a sentence. That should be pretty brief... unless they don't even want a description? I listed all the awards also and described what they were. Is that unnecessary?

If they are ambigous, yes, or so incredibly big (Davidsons, Intel, Siemens) that you need to describe them because they are very noteworthy research achievements. If they explain themselves (such as NHS, Merit Scholar, AP Scholar, or AIME Score) then do not list an explanation for them.

After all, if someone actually won Intel, I'm sure adding more text explaining how their legendary project won is what adcoms want.

What about regional science fairs, regional music competitions, and school/regional awards? Do those merit an explanation? I think those are the ones that also tend to be less known to the adcoms.

They need two-three words of explanation, that's all. You may want to put two or three words to describe your science experiment, but keep it concise. You may think that every word is essential, but just remember - the longer it is, the more likely it is that the entire thing will be disregarded. No one's going to read it. Give the essential information, and that's IT.

When in doubt, hand it to an experienced adult and have him or her edit your resume for you. He or she should know how to get it down to one page.

What format do you suggest utilizing? I have mine in an outline format. There's tons of space, so I don't know if that's the best format to use, since it makes it SEEM longer... xD

I also want to know how to format my resume. I have all the information typed up, but I'm not sure how I should format it.

Is it acceptable to upload a resume on the "Additional Info" section of the common app?
