Resume

Do we send a resume to the college? if so, how? do we put it under the additional info?

You should only send a resume to a college if:
1) There is other information about your ECs (internships, volunteer experiences, etc.) that cannot be shown on the regular app and if you feel that you MUST share this information (make sure you don't repeat the same activities over)
2) The Colleges suggest/require one

For common app, just add it to the 'additional information' category at the end.

I see two schools of thought on this. One is the minimalist appoach of don't do it unless specifically requested, and in any event do not repeat any info contained elsewhere in the app. The other is go all out to brag about you're achievements with a resume. Both are valid approaches, depending on the selectivity of the college.

For less selective colleges, it may not be needed. For highly selective colleges, I've come to believe sending a resume is virtually expected, and in fact necessary to help differentiate from all the other applicants with top stats. For example, in the JHU forum on this boad, the admissions officer states Hopkins wants a resume, that it's helpful in reading an app. However, I don't think there is any mention of this on the JHU website. Also, well known college admissions counselors advise sending a resume.

A competitive applicant to a highly selective college is most likely going to have more EC's and awards than fit in the app forms. In any event, a resume will help to highlight the details behind the line items in an app and present a more complete picture. Depending on the school, it is likely that most of the other applicants are sending resumes...so what's the downside of submitting one? It should make for a more complete application, unless it is specifically banned by the school.

bluejay79, the JHU officer on this forum advised against sending a resume.

yeah i asked during open house, its a no

Yale discourages resume's as well. As far as I know, none of ivy-league applicants at my school is sending in a resume.

tux08902- thanks for clarifying, I could have sworn I read it there, but I guess not.

I just did a search on the JHU forum on this board. Per the quotes below by AdmissionsDaniel from the Hopkins admissions office, a resume is certainly allowed, if not encouraged in applying to Hopkins:

“To all, do note that you can always add "additional information" to your application to present any information you think the Admissions committee should have when evaluating you. It is your application so feel free to put your own personal stamp on it. If you choose you can use the "additional info", send in a separate letter to Admissions, or include a separate "resume" it is your choice.”

2.“ …if you are attaching a** resume** we need the following information included:

*listing your accomplishments in the order of importance
*including grade level
*including time commitment (hrs/wk; wks/yr) for extracurriculars
*listings offices helds, titles, etc. for extracurriculars
*detail the region for honors/awards received (your school, your city, etc.)
*jobs - employers - dates of employment - hrs/week

You can design the layout of your** resume** as you prefer, but please provide us with the content we request when appropriate.”

“Or if you are using the JHU application - submit an additional resume **and statement of your involvement with the paper. You have that option."

“Decisions are not based on one or two factors in the application review, but rather involve every detail from the review of the transcripts, test scores, rec. letters, essays, **resume
, etc. etc. etc.”

Q: Do we have to send resume? I never know that . I thought I simply need to complete the JHU online application. Anyway, I have the same question. What is the deadline to sumit online ?
A: Sending Extra Resume: Optional.

"Your choice -- you can mail a separate resume, add it to the additional information section, or not submit an addition. We have no preference."

"Supplemental materials are welcome additions to the Johns Hopkins application, whether they be CDs, slides, portfolios, art work, etc…Our time is spent focusing on the important parts of your application: transcript, essays, recommendations, resume."
