Retake a 710 Math / 2310 total?

I'm very happy with my March SAT score, the first on my record (8th grade 2170 was wiped) and quite respectable at 2310: 800 CR / 710 M / 800 W w/ 11 essay. I am pondering whether to retake to try to raise my math score; SAT math is not my forte, but if I spent a long time drilling (I didn't do much practice this time around, just intensive review of strategies) I think I could get my speed up and actually be able to finish every section, which would raise my score because I'm getting very few wrong of the questions I do answer. On the other hand--the CR and W have nowhere to go but down. I am aware that 2310 is a great score. Is it worth all my invested time to retake (4 hour test + many more to properly prep)?

Yes. There’s really no excuse not to get the 800 in math if you’re capable of doing the reading and writing.

Where are you planning on applying? Your score is phenomenal for the vast majority of places. If you were my daughter, I’d tell you that you would be better off investing the time in your essays or on something fun.

christiansoldier: Hmm. Why do you say there’s “no excuse”? I would retake aiming for 750+, as I don’t think I’m capable of 800. My mind usually does not jump to the “quick” way of solving things.

momfromme: I’ll be applying as an intended English/CS major (with CS as the secondary interest) to schools known for English, not CS–Yale, Swarthmore, Amherst, Pomona, Oberlin, etc.

With a 710 in math, you probably only missed 3-4 problems. You don’t think you can just get 3 or 4 more right for that 2400? Math really is the easiest section to get an 800 on because the answers are absolutely certain, whereas there are always one or two CR or W ones that are questionable. A smart guy like you shouldn’t be denied a 2400 by math.

If you want to be an English major, then there’s no reason to retake the SAT just for the math section; you got perfect scores on the literary and grammar sections already.

You could always take a math subject test and score ~750 on that. It would show colleges that maybe you just had a bad test day, and are highly capable in every subject.

Either way your scores are flat out amazing.

Don’t take it; it’ll be a waste of time.

I’m pondering the same thing as you - 720 math score with 2310 overall.

I would say if you’re planning on majoring in math/science, it might be a good idea to retake. Otherwise, I wouldn’t worry about it.

Honestly, it wouldn’t be worth your time to take it. Your score is phenomenal and obviously good enough to get you anywhere. =)

unless you plan on becoming an engineer and you’re applying to schools like MIT, Caltech, CMU, etc. I definitely would NOT retake. GJ on your amazing score!

Nope ,retake it .Retake it without studying much '- just improve your math and even if you dont get these perfect CR and WR scores again ,you have a good chance of having a perfect superscore.Even if you have 2250 on your second try you will prove colleges that 2310 is not accidental and you have not cheated.

I agree with most people here, you should really only retake if you’re applying to techie schools like MIT and Caltech, which you probably won’t since you want to be an English major. However, should you decide to retake, you could end up with a near perfect superscore. In your situation, I wouldn’t though, I’d be in the street yelling that I got a 2310 on my SAT.

Unless you get a tingly feeling of excitement when you sit down and take a standardized test, there is no reason to retake it. Rule of thumb: if you have a 2250+ and 700+ in each section then there is no reason to retake it.

christiansoldier: Actually, the 710 is probably a result of omit 5 + 0/1 wrong. I am consistently unable to finish the grid-ins section. (Female, btw!)

Borb: Oh, yes–I have a 760 on the Math II Subject Test.

I definitely will not be applying to tech schools, as I hate science. Was also leaning toward one-and-done; it’s the SENSIBLE choice, but I also feel like I’d be giving up the chance at a higher superscore.

READ: They won’t care…Your score is fine as is. Even though it clearly displays a weakness in math, there is no reason to retake.

OMG

I was just about to ask this question and then I saw this thread.

I have the EXACT same score as you 800 800 710 M.

I’m wondering about retaking myself.

Isn’t this an oxymoron?

And welcome to the club, xatuuatx!

Don’t retake it. My friend received a 2310 on his first try, too, and he got into Yale EA! Just make sure other areas (like extracurricular activities, GPA, essay) are well-balanced as well.

^ Thanks! Was your friend similarly unbalanced in distribution?
