Retake ACT writing?

Although I do not know my ACT score yet, I felt very comfortable with the writing portion. I will most likely retake the ACT given that I am in the start of my junior year. If I am satisfied with my writing score will I need to take the writing portion again with my next ACT? Are the scores separate or do they go together?

Seperate: you do not need to take again

Hi Texasbeast-
The above is not exactly correct–if you are applying to a school that requires the ACT with writing, they will not look at any ACT scores that are submitted that do not include the writing portion.

We were at a presentation for Rice. They require the ACT with writing and will only accept ACT scores that include writing. So for instance, if you wanted to apply to Rice and took the ACT twice–the first time you got a 28 composite and a 10 on the writing; and the second time you got a 33 composite, and opted not to take the writing. The only score that Rice would accept would be the 28 composite with writing–they do not accept ACT scores that do not have that component. You would not be able to submit the 33 ACT (or they won’t consider it) because it doesn’t include the writing portion. They were very clear about this in the presentation.

So, even though it is a separate score component, the writing portion does not “stand alone”.

Hope this helps.

@bjdkin thanks for catching my error

Thanks for the help! Most of the schools I will apply to require writing so I will definitely take the writing again.
