Hello, My D just finished up her freshman year at ND and she is very upset that she earned a C in Calc II. She is preprofessional and is very worried that this will stop her from getting into Med School. Many universities have a freshmen forgiveness or an option to retake the class for a better grade. Does ND have anything similiar? Thanks for your help.

No. Once you take a class, you cannot retake the same or an equivalent class.

Some things to consider.

In the long run medical schools do not place as heavy a weight on Calculus as they do other science classes.

Med schools love to see improvement. Perhaps your daughter can find a way to truly prove her ability and understanding of calculus by taking Calculus III (something many preprofessional students do not take). If she does well in this class she will have a great story to tell on her application or even in an interview.

I asked one of the pre-professional advisers about C’s. She told me that as long as your GPA is high and your “C” is lonely and doesn’t have any friends (her words exactly, lol), you should be fine. Also, freshman year courses will get less attention than higher level courses. Lastly, Irish is right- a higher grade in Calc III will help counteract a C in Calc II since they will see that you worked hard, improved, and now have a better understanding of (presumably) both levels of the subject. The same goes for a high grade in biochemistry after a low grade in organic chemistry, etc.
