Retake just ACT or ACT + writing in September?

Hey everyone! So I got a kinda unbalanced 2200 (690 CR, 710 math, 800 writing) on my June SAT and an unbalanced 32 (36 E, 34 m, 27 R, 29 S, 35 E/W, 11 essay) on my June ACT. I'm shooting for Dartmouth ED and Georgetown RD as my top two choices (both high reaches I know) but know my scores aren't up to par, especially since Georgetown doesn't consider the writing section on the SAT at all.

So I'm going to take the ACT in September and retake some subject tests in October, but I was wondering since I got a high essay and combined E/W score on my first ACT if I should take ACT + writing or ACT w/out writing in September? For example, if a college "only takes" the ACT with writing, would they ignore a composite 34 w/out writing if I got a 32 w/ writing in June? Or would they take my 35 combined E/W score and "add it" to my ACT w/out writing taken in September?

Thanks for your help!

Unfortunately, yes most colleges would “ignore” the composite w/o writing if they require you to take the writing portion as well. As painful as it is, you need to take the writing again.

Haha alright thanks for your input. I was just wondering because I’ve heard that the grading of the ACT essay can be a bit random—some people get an 11 and then a 6, or vise versa—and I didn’t want to go down (also, the idea of having 45 less minutes of standardized testing is definitely appealing). Thanks again!

Take the writing portion again and even if your writing score does go down some, it really won’t matter that much in the end. Most colleges just want you to take it, but it doesn’t matter how well you do on it, as long as you don’t completely bomb it. Good luck.
