I'm applying EA with a 800 Math II and a 740 Chem. Worth it to retake chem? Yay or nay?

My sons’ SAT II experiences were that when they re-tested, it didn’t move their scores a whole lot. I guess part of the problem is that when you’re already scoring a 740, there’s not a lot of distance left, and thus, even if you get, as an example, a third of what you left on the table previously, it’s only 20 points.

Do you have reason to believe you’d score an 800 or close to it? How much time will it take away from other aspects of your education and applications? Are you going to spend appreciable time studying for the retake? What else could you be doing profitably with that time? Essays all written? Are they as good as you can make them? How about your grades? Remember, we’re much of the way through the first semester, and should you be deferred, your semester grades will wind up being the last bit of academic accomplishment the admissions committee sees.

I think you’ll have to answer the question for yourself, but those are a few of the questions I’d ask if I had to make the decision for myself, or if my sons were still in the process.

Yes. Definitely retake the 740.

^^ Oh, please stop!

Harvard doesn’t publish average SAT Subject Test scores, but the Harvard Crimson recently published the Class of 2018 average SAT scores. My guess is the admitted students Subject Test scores would probably align with their SAT scores. DO NOT bother retaking the 740 – it’s a fine score – and a higher score will not get you any closer to the brass ring: <a href=“The Harvard Crimson | Class of 2018 By the Numbers”>http://features.thecrimson.com/2014/freshman-survey/admissions/
