Retake SAT score for ED applicant?

Hello,

I just got my SAT score. It was 2320. I got 800 CR and 800 Writing with 12 essay. My math was 720. This was uncharacteristically weak, as i got 800s or missed at most one in math in practice tests. So by retaking, i should be able to get super score or single setting of 2380+, as I think that is more to my ability. However two SAT II is also recommended, and I only have one SAT II in world history (760). Thus, this November, should I take SAT II's (Math II, Physics, US History, maybe retake World History). Also, My grades are a bit weaker than what is normally expected at northwestern. However, I have had pretty strong course rigor and go too a tough STEM school. My AP scores are also very high, as I have also self studied many exams and have double digit scores of 5. My ECs are also pretty solid. Considering this, is worth while to retake the SAT? I also took an ACT and have not gotten score. Also, I am applying for history major. I have national awards in this area and also have strong AP scores: 5s in USH, WH, EURO, ART HIST, along with Human geo, macro, micro, psych, Ap Calc AB, and AP lang.

tldr; send 2380+ SAT, 760 World History, 35ish+ ACT or 35ish+ ACT, 2320 SAT, and multiple subject tests?

Honestly I don’t think you should retake the SAT, because 2320 is very very good for Northwestern already. 720 for a Maths is not too weak, especially when you have school grades and APs to back up. If you retake it and still not get an 800 (bouncing from 720 to 750s won’t do), you’re not going to look good. NU will definitely rather see you do it in one-seating than two, especially when the difference is not that big really.

NU doesn’t require students to take two SAT II unless you’re applying to a specific school that asks for it…?

Given that you hadn’t gotten your ACT score back, perhaps you should wait. Sending in this SAT score will be more than enough already.

Agree with alafae. You are good as is.

If you’re not applying for Engineering, I wouldn’t recommend a retake.
If you’re applying to Engineering, talk to your GC. Since NU superscores SAT, so long as your CR and W scores don’t fall through the floor, it couldn’t hurt – though with those scores, I honestly don’t know whether it will help.

Alright, thank you for the responses. I decided to register for SAT II instead, as I am applying for History major in Weinberg. Although subject tests are not required, two are “highly recommended.” My counselor said this essentially does mean you need to have them. Now hopefully I will get good scores on them. Hopefully my ACT math score is a 35 or 36 to make up for the SAT math and also I get 800 in MATH II and Physics.

However, I still think I will retake the SAT in December, for RD schools. also I want to try for the MMSS program, and that application is due January 1. If i can improve my MATH SAT in December, it will really improve my chances for that.

I seriously doubt your decision to retake your SAT. Unless you’re certain you can get 2400 (‘certain’ does not even exist), it doesn’t look good to admission offices if you are retaking it just to get 10 or 20 marks higher. It’ll probably give you a bad image too. Too test-oriented.

Yea, you are right about that. I don’t want to come off that way at all, nor is it an accurate representation of me. I honestly dreaded studying for the SAT this summer and believe it is a meaningless test. I am satisfied with the overall score. Yet, the math performance was uncharacteristic so I really believe that I could and should a much higher math score. Northwestern 75 percentile is 780 in math, and I want to apply for the math heavy MMSS program if I am accepted. Thus, I think a high score in Math on the december SAT will benefit me for MMSS as well as if I am deferred to NU. Most schools have score choice, so I don’t have to send it in if i don’t do too well.

I guess having an 800 Maths II can cover that.

So i ended up getting a 36 (36/36/36/36/12) on my ACT. Should I send the SAT and ACT? Also, do subject tests matter if you send ACT?

Subject tests and ACT are entirely different things, so of course you should send your subject test!
Congrats on the AWESOME score, maybe don’t send the SAT score if you have this ACT

Both scores are phenomenal, I would send both!
