Hey guys... I took the December ACT and did relatively well. In fact, I got a 36 on the English portion, and a 10 on the essay (34 combined- but i've heard this doesn't matter, as long as you get above a 8 or 9 most colleges are OK with the essay score). However, I wasn't very satisfied with some other sections, so I'll be retaking the test in the upcoming months. Do I still have to write the dreaded essay again (i.e. will colleges care?)? Honestly it sucks and makes my hand cramp. I'd really rather go home after that Science section.

umm yes if you want colleges to actually care about that ACT score. As you know most colleges require Act WITH writing.

Out of curiosity but why would u retake act when you have decent (enough to go to HYP) score…

Like I mentioned in the original post, I’m simply not satisfied with a few other sections. They brought down my composite considerably. Also, I don’t understand why I would need to take the writing again when i got a perfectly fine score before? It doesn’t make sense really… why can’t I just take the 4 sections and leave. To clarify, I will be submitting ALL of my scores, so colleges will see that 10 I had originally got.

they still want it tho… Dont ask me why;

Are you sure lol ? Haha I’ll believe you for know but can someone else affirm this?

If a college requires the ACT with writing, they won’t consider any scores that were from an ACT that did not include the writing portion.

We were at a presentation that included Duke, Gtown, U of Chicago and a few other top rated schools–the schools that required the writing portion of the ACT stressed that they will not consider any ACT scores that were not taken with writing.

Kk thanks guys… just wanted to make sure before I signed up for the retake. Its unfortunate that they won’t count those scores, but that’s the way it is I guess.
