Retaking two classes for the third time???

Hello everyone! I have a question. I'm currently a student at SMC planning to transfer, but I am having trouble with two classes.

I will be retaking Psych 2 for the third time this fall and I am planning to retake Philos 23 for the third time as well this summer. Will it affect my chances of transferring to let's say a UC like UCLA? I got an F for Philos 23 because the professor I took it with twice was VERY difficult and only a very small amount of students received A's while the others barely passed the class. I thought taking the class with her again would've been easier but I was wrong! I got an F the first time and now I have a W the second time. I know I can get an A with the angother professor who I am planning to retake it with because my friend took it and she said it was very easy and got an A and I checked grade distributer.

For Psych 2, I also have the same issue. One "F" and one "W". I will retake the class and I can get an A or B.

I am a Psychology major as well.

So my question is, will it look bad on my transcript? I am concerned because I do want to transfer!

Thank you for your help and answers! :)

It will not look good, but from what I understand the UCs are very forgiving when it comes to Ws and substandard grades, if the grades are replaced. If you read through these post there are tons of people in your situation who are attending the top UCs. In fact some people purposely fail or withdraw because they do not want a C in the class, because it will bring down their GPA. Good Luck ! Really shoot for the A.

I think the W isn’t a problem, but the F might be even if you retake the class. I only say this because it’s occurred twice and psychology is extremely impacted. What’s your UC GPA?

I think your chances for ucla psychology are bad, unfortunately. They admit transfers into pre psychology and they don’t tolerate repeating a major prerequisite course more than once. Are those classes major prereq classes?

@oongaboonga‌ Psych 2 is not really a prerequisite to transfer from SMC to UCLA for the Psych major. Only Psych 1 is. So far I’ve taken Psych 11 and Psych 13 and I got an A for Psych 11 and a B for Psych 13. Philos 23 is one of the prerequisites. I already took Philos 1 but I took Philos 23 earlier. I didn’t know you only needed one philosophy class. If I did I would’ve not taken another philosophy class and be in this situation. But of course I need to fix my two F’s. That’s why I am sort of stressing out for messing those grades.

@uclammg‌ My current UC GPA is a 3.4? It’s because of those two F’s. It would be higher if I didn’t have them! I also still plan to take UC transferrable courses to boost up my GPA.

You are currently not looking very good for UCLA psych major, considering how impacted it is, but it’s not to say that you can’t get in. Raise your GPA and have a really strong PS will help you very much. You want to have a good reason for choosing this major and elaborate in your PS.

From my experience, I got failed Cultural Anthro 2 times (D the first time, F the 2nd), did academic renewal, and got a B the 3rd time during summer before apps were due. I’m an econ major so it didn’t affect me much–I still got into UCSB and pending for UCI. Academic renewal replaces the grade on the transcript as “AR” both failing times and only shows that I retook and got a B, which is all that matters  hope this helps

I failed the same class around 4-5 times.

1-3 tries? The professor was nice enough to continue giving me incompletes
4th try? I was failing, but dropped at the last minute
5th try? I got an A!

Seriously, don’t be discouraged. It took me about…4 years? to pass this class.

@smcttransfer I wonder if retaking a class in UCLA terms includes retaking any W’s. Ia UCLA your first choice?

I can understand the source of your stress, but it’s not lucrative to stress about past failures. Retake the two classes to bring your gpa up and see what you can do from there.
