Returning Students FA

Have any returning students gotten their FA packages via Albert yet? I know they said end of May/early June....seems like that would be by now!

writestuff,

You might have missed milkandsugar’s post about not betting on the timeframe provided by (multiple) FA office staff. Apparently, the returning students FA notification did not come out until July last year and later in June the year before. I might have mixed up the years.
But the months were definitely June and July for the pat two years.

So, do not hold your breath quite yet. :(

Hmmm thanks, I did miss that. There’s a lot of hubris on their part to think returning students can automatically come back without knowing how much $$$$ they need after FA. NYU is not for the faint of heart when it comes to financial dealings!

writestuff,

You are so right. We are expected to adhere to their deadlines (or there are penalties) while their deadlines can be changed at will. Even in an important area such as FA. Don’t even get me started with my recent dealings with the big bureaucracy there. Just waiting for the next shoe to drop, in the form of issues with new FA for this year. :(

So we got D’s FA award today. A little disappointing given her stellar year, but we will make it work. I still believe her experience and contacts gained through Tisch are worth the investment. Hope everyone else hears soon, too!

Hi, writestuff,

Well, NYU was not as late as I expected based on milkandsurgar’s previous post on this matter (at least in your case). We have not heard yet. What you are saying confirms what I have heard and expect. The best FA packages go out to the incoming freshmen. I guess once you are in NYU, they figure the chances are you will stay with the school unless there are drastic changes in financial need. Even then, I wonder if NYU will be that generous with FA for the returning students?

I wish you well in making things work out. I can’t wait for S to be finished with NYU and I am starting to hope that he will forget about law school (unless he can get a great FA package) and just get a good job coming out of NYU undergrad.

My issue was the recent email we got from the head of NYU stating that tuition and room/board went up 3. something% but that FA would go up about that same amount. That is not what happened. Actual scholarships from NYU went down (very slightly) not up. Pell went up but that has nothing to do with NYU and they increased work study, which for a Tisch student is a joke because she’s already putting in 60 hour weeks, although does plan a small work study job this coming year. She is not an MLK scholar, but does have a pretty good scholarship package compared to many on CC, so we are appreciative of that. If they would have just done the percentages as they stated in that email, I would have had no complaint.

evolving, that is exactly how I feel. Just graduate on time, get a job and whatever happens after that, fingers crossed. Our FA has not changed in 3 years. With all the increases, the FA has stayed the same.We even appealed for more aid for sophomore year, Flat out NO. And my income went down slightly that year. Very dissapointing. If I knew then what I know now…

My hat off to all you wonderful parents (writestuff, milkandsugar, SDonCC, vonlost, etc.) who are supporting their children’s dream of attending NYU despite the “back-breaking” costs.

This little thread is a testament to what is happening on the parents’ side (and the parents’ worries) as the kids get their NYU education. Really, this goes hand in hand with many of the students’ queries about how to make ends meet when attending NYU. All you kids who have other choices for undergrad with less economic burden, think carefully about your options! NYU’s tight or less than ideal financial aid policies towards the majority of students makes the NYU education very costly indeed.

My son’s FA is not there yet. It might be that Stern releases FA a bit later, or that we are at bottom of the list… (despite that we have 2 kids in private colleges).

My S’s FA package is not available yet. He is in CAS.

Is NYU generally speedy for incoming students? I still haven’t received a “final” FA statement (e.g., that includes potential money for being a PTK member), and it is fairly late in the game. I don’t know how they expect students to make decisions without a full picture.

Let’s see. Incoming freshmen got official admission decisions on 4/1 and, if admitted, full financial aid package along with the snail mail notification of admission. (From memory of S’s year, Freshman Class of 2010; not sure if they are giving FA notifications by email now)

You have been accepted as a transfer student and have not heard about FA yet? Well, NYU apparently treats NYU transfers like upperclassmen because their FA package notifications are not locked into a specific date (there are delays as documented by others on this forum). You already got your official letter of acceptance as a transfer from NYU but no complete FA info yet? Another person left hanging in suspense while waiting to see if NYU is affordable. :(

I received an initial statement ($5,500), but someone on the forums said I should be entitled to an additional $2000 “unsubsidized,” and this hasn’t been added. Not sure if this user was correct. In addition, I was emailed and told I should be eligible for more FA as a PTK member. But none of this has been added yet.

Have you called the FA office to find out when you will have all parts of your FA package laid out for you? They should at least let you know when you can expect to have closure on the matter.

Well, S received email to check his available FA package in his account at NYUHome. Guess what, it was referring to FA FOR ACADEMIC YEAR 2010-2011. Hmmm, kind of late. Wonder what happened to the new FA package for 2011-2012? Still have not heard in our case.

It was several hours after the email that we could actually check…fingers crossed.

Thanks, writestuff. You are right. Checked this AM and FA package in. No more $ from NYU as returning student for S, just federal and state grants/ loan/ work-study based on our drastically changed circumstances. Wish this had been last year, S might have gotten a full ride then! Still better than nothing. Thanks to the government and our tax money at work (we paid a lot of taxes when the incomes were very high)!

To me it was a relief just to get it…even though we wished it was more. That way, we knew how to proceed as far as the amount of loans needed and got all that handled very quickly. The waiting was the hardest part. Really hoping D will try for an RA position third-year as that would replace the loans for a year.

GL with working out the details of the FA situation! I know the RA situation sounds good.
Hope you and your family will have a great summer!
