Revelle? Muir? Warren?= A question to UCSD current students/alumni/ppl

As you probably know, it's that time of year for UC apps...and when applying to UCSd you have to rank which college you would like to be in..I have no idea which college i should chose...and I need some serious advice.
Could you tell me about the dorm food/housing/number of GE requirements/etc for the college you are/were in?..

Your help is greatly appreciated!

Revelle - most GE req, worst dining halls (am i right?), oldest but not the worst dorms... or so i've heard.

darn it...I'm fine with the GEs cus I'm coming from a school that has a heavy courseload anyways..but the food sux??? -_-' the food needs to be good....

IMO the GEs should be your biggest factor, assuming you're going into science (and since it's UCSD that's safe assumption). You'll only be living on campus for one or two years, you don't want to pay for a fresh coat of paint and extra closet space with an extra 5 courses you need to take before graduating.

you're right..i trying to go into a science major, pre-med. so would revelle be the best choice for me? I heard that revelle kids have no social life at all.period and are extremely competitive..like they won't help each other on homework questions and stuff..

i'd say muir is the best. it's centrally located in the campus and the dining hall is not that bad. also, it has the fewest GEs. you really don't want to have a lot of GEs; it would be better to finish off your GEs as fast as you can so that you can concentrate on taking classes for your major.

Does revelle have a better rep for pre-med / grad?

there are a lot of premeds in revelle, but not ALL of them...you will find premeds in all schools. I really don't think that grad schools will care which college you were in in ucsd...they want to see what classes you take...and it might be better for them to see what classes you chose to take on your own rather than just the classes you had to take just because they were GEs. you can do just as well in a college with fewer GEs and then you can take whatever science/premed courses you were interested in. the reason so many premeds choose revelle is because several of the GEs overlap with common science majors. if you're looking into med school for the future, it might be a good idea to be in a college that is not so devoted to science because then you would take a wider variety of classes, and med schools (and other grad schools) like well-rounded students.

revelle food isn't too bad, but if you're a vegetarian, it'll get old fast. if you have a boatdload of ap's, the ge's arent too much either. i took a lot of ap's (chem bio physicsC bcCalc euro world us englishLang spanishLang) and i have 5 ge classes i need to take - the hum sequence. if i was at warren, i'd only have 2 ge classes to take - the writing sequence.

warren is good for engineering [i probably should have gone this route]. revelle's GE's overlap with premed requirements, but if you aren't, you'd better have alot of ap's. and erc has the best dorms BY FAR, but i hear the food isn't the best.

Dude i explored campus and checked out the ERC dorms. ***. Argo sucks compared to those.... those... beautiful buildings.

wait..so which college has the least ge's? i begining to think maybe too many ge's * ahem revelle* isn't so great after alll....but ugh revellle seems like the right track for a pre-med..

muir has the least GEs. again, many premeds choose revelle only because a lot of the GEs match the premed requirements. but it really doesn't matter. i know several other premeds, like myself, who have an easier time in other colleges because there are not as many GEs.

I was wondering, I was planning on going the premed path, I heard that revelle has the most ge's that overlap with it, so I was wondering,
1) Does ucsd go by the "curve" (10% of students get A's, 20% of students get B's,etc)
2) Does that mean going to revelle rather than other colleges more competition for A's in science classes?

As in all colleges, some classes are curved, some arent, and the curve varies by prfessor. For example, my math class (calc 3 - math20c) is curved to a b, where the mean grade nets a b; my physics class (mechanics - 2a) is graded absolutely, where a 90% nets an A. Engineering classes tend to be curved to a B- or C, liberal arts classes tend to be curved slightly higher, usually to a B.

Going to Revelle only changes what GE classes you have to take. The classes themselves, aside from the humanities sequence (HUM 1-5, Warren 1-2, ERC MMW1-6, etc), are identical. That is, in a given math/science/engineering/political science/etc class, some students are from Revelle, some from Muir, some from ERC, etc. It doesnt change the grade competition.

:)

actually, what I meant was say there was a class of 200 students, now everyone scored say a 98 on the test. However, this one person scored a 92. Because he scored relatively lower than the other students, does that mean that he gets a B? Or does he still get an A because a 92 is still in range of an A?

Thats so unlikely to happen that most people don't concern themselves with it ;). Remember, while people are more serious in college, the tests are measurably more difficult, and as a result, people don't always score as highly. If students almost all got 98's, i'd assume the teacher would either grade linearly or make the subsequent tests harder.

:)

if you want an the EASIEST GE sequence, choose muir. though our dorms look like prisons we have the best dining hall?

if you want new dorms choose eleanor roosevelt, though they do have a hefty GE sequence.

thurgood marshall has DOC which i heard was horrible.

warren is good as well

sixth is fine but they are out in no where

don't choose revelle, worse GEs ever and their dorms are worse than muir.

i don't think we do a bell curve, i highly doubt it, i haven't seen it used.

i dunno about muir's dining hall...the selection didnt seem as good as plaza caf

Okay..so I think this is going to be my list fo my app ( for pre-med by the way):
1. revelle (just because most pre-meds start out there)
2. Muir ( because of their GEs)
3. Warren ( I dunno why....isn't this the one with the dorms that have the view of the Pacific?)
4.ERC (new dorms and what not...don't like language courses though)
5. Thurgood Marshall (don't wanna go here)
6. Sixth College ( absolutely don't want to go here...what a wierd name)

warren doesn't have a view of the pacific it's erc/muir/revelle

are you sure about revelle? the dorms aren't great. the baths are horrid, they switch from hot to cold and the pressure is awful
