The Great Gatsby
Tom vs. Gatsby
The Great Gatsby is a story by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Nick Carraway narrates the story and is also one of the main people in the book. We learn everything about Gatsby through Nick. Gatsby and Tom are alike in many ways and different in many ways also. Daisy was the eye of attraction of both men.
Tom come from money and has never had to work for money a day in his life. Gatsby on the other hand done a lot of shady business to make a lot of money cause he wanted to be rich so bad he would do anything. Tom use to money to travel and to please himself. Gatsby sees money as a way to get Daisy back. Gatsby thought money would win Daisy away from Tom.
Tom is crude and has grown up with money. He is neither refined nor gracious cause he think of himself only. Gatsby didn’t grow up with money and care about others than him. Gatsby is socially inept and he strives to be a courteous host. Tom is more socially is a good people person but he doesn’t care if he pleases those around him or not. On the other hand, Gatsby wants to please those around him because he wants everyone to like him.
Tom is overpowering and a large man and uses his presence to intimidate. Daisy calls him a brute and his mistress calls him “hulking” enough times to get a punch in the nose. Gatsby, on the other hand, is barely recognized and shy. He is barely recognized at his own parties. He is not an imposing presence even when he wants to be, as in his confrontation with Tom in the hotel.
They both love or think they love Daisy. Tom has been unfaithful to her since their honeymoon. But don’t want to lose her and will do anything to make sure he don’t lose her. Gatsby has been in love with Daisy since before he went to war and was heartbroken when she married Tom when she told him she waits for him. Gatsby earns his money for the chance to win Daisy. He will do anything to win her back.
In the end Tom do end up with Daisy and Gatsby loses her. But Tom killed Gatsby because he was so worried of Daisy leaving him for Gatsby. Daisy stands by Tom stand and don’t say anything about what happen to Gatsby. Daisy didn’t really love any of them; she just loved the money they both have. Tom and Daisy move away like nothing happen at all.
