Revoking Acceptances

So here’s the low down.

I was accepted to Brown ED.

My hook two published books are my hook. I’ve consistently done well in Humanities class, am president of writing club, am entering as a Literary Arts mamor, wrote my essay about writing…obviously writing is my thing.

My schedule for this year is not particularly impressive.

Humanities (a double period)
AP Calculus
Physics
AP Lit
Chorus

Now. Here’s the thing. I’m like a lot of the rest of you in this big way–AP Calculus is kicking my ass. I’m looking at a low B or high C if I stay in this class.

There’s a Calculus class–non AP–that I could easily switch into. I would definitely do better in this class.

Given that my grade would be higher, and Brown clearly isn’t after me for my math skills, do you think I could switch into Calculus without risking my acceptance?

If it were me making decisions, I'd say go ahead. I don't understand why everyone needs to take AP Calc.

Unfortunately, some schools get upset when you switch classes (since you did tell them on your application). The guidance counselor at my daughter's HS tried his best to prevent students from dropping classes or taking easier ones in this situation.

Since you're in, and Brown won't even see this change until after the fact (in June when final transcripts are sent), it's really hard to believe that it would affect your acceptance. The safest advice is to talk to your guidance counselor, and then either you or your GC call Brown and ask them. I honestly don't see this as a problem, but you might want to notify Brown first just to make sure.

And Brown wouldn't rescind your acceptance if you got that high C if you stayed in AP Calc (as long as the rest of your grades were A's or high B's).

Thanks so much, fireandrain. My college counselor is fantaaaastic, so I'm sure she'll call Brown if she thinks it's necessary.

The truth is, Brown will likely neither be concerned with your lower grade (especially if it's a B) nor with the course change.

However, I think that I would err on the side of caution and not change unless there is some other reason why you really need to be in an easier class to get an A.

Your counselor will know the best way to go about this though, especially if she's any good.

The only way a school will rescind your Early Decision acceptance is if they see a dramatic departure (on the negative side) from what they saw on your application. Hence, if you're an A or high B student and suddenly get straight B-'s or C's, or if you're generally a good kid and then get arrested, then you need to start worrying. Elsewise, I'm sure they won't make much of a fuss, and a poor grade in just one class (especially an AP class) is likely not grounds for revocation of acceptance.

Thanks guys--

honestly, it's not the fact that my grade will be lower that primarily makes me want to switch--it's that I'm utterly miserable in a class that goes too fast for me with material I have to struggle to understand that I'm not remotely interested in in the first place.

ghh. High school.

So my college counselor is calling Brown sometime in the next few days. I'll let you know what they say. Thanks so much for your help!

Bad news, guys--

my college counselor called our regional representative, who said "Hannah should absolutely stick with AP calculus."

:(

Stick it out. I would say that short of punching a teacher or getting expelled for selling ecstasy pills in the Girls' Room, you are unlikely to get rescinded.

Onto the important topic: What books did you write? (Fiction? non-fiction? subject? Amazon link? :-)

:D YA Fiction. Not out yet, buuuut--

Amazon.com: Break: Hannah Moskowitz: Books

Hey Hannah... you should send me a copy for free... :D. All the work I do on this site has to be worth something. I'll even post a review on Amazon and on here (and promise to be honest).

Not at all surprised by the answer, btw.

If I had copies in my hands, I'd send them eeeeeeeveryone, haha! But a few more months 'til then, sadly...
