Rice Common application admission supplement ?

In addition to the common application Rice requires their own supplemental application.

18. of the Rice supplement ask you to list the other colleges where you have applied or expect to apply.

Rice is a member of the NACAC and the NACAC Principles of Good Practice include the following:

B. Admission, Financial Aid and Testing Policies and Procedures

Postsecondary members agree that they will:
1......
2. not require candidates or the secondary schools to indicate the order of the candidates’ college or university preferences, except under Early Decision plans;

--- I believe this question (and others such as asking about family members occupations and college history, etc.) is irrelevant to the application process.

Since the application process has become what it has I think students should just list the top 5 schools from US News + World Report and then Rice and other schools like them can happily report that they are attracting the same caliber of students as Stanford, Harvard, etc.

What do you think about these type of questions and why answer other than just leaving it blank or as I have suggested adding 4 or 5 name schools ?

But Rice doesn't require you to list your preferences. What's your point?

They're just trying to see what schools attract the same kinds of students who would apply to Rice. It does not influence them in whether or not to accept you.
As to parents jobs: I would think they are trying to see who would need financial help later..also they want to see the educational background of the family. I think that is very important to understanding the potential student. If your parents are professionals you would have potentially had a lot of support and extra's throughout your school career. If your parents are not that well educated it might indicate a first generation college student, which might interest Rice and help them understand that the student might not have had the same support. Neither is better, just different.
Rice does not go "by the numbers" so they want to know who YOU are and how you came to be "you".
Most people expect these questions.. Why are you reluctant to answer them?

Elrod.. Perhaps, if you are that concerned about some malicious intent on the part of Rice receiving such information, you should not apply.

Your suggeston about just posting the top 5 colleges according to US News would then require you to provide false information on your application unless of course you did in fact apply to those colleges. By signing and providing false information on your application you of course understand that should Rice ever confirm such false information and you have been accepted, your acceptance could be withdrawn. If you become a student and this information is discovered you could be expelled. Far fetched? Maybe? But, I sure would not want to take the risk.

It is not false information at all as I expect to apply to Harvard, Stanford, Yale, Princeton and whatever the 5th name is on the list. I may later change my mind and not apply to all or any of them.

I may just put undecided or the University of Houston.

The whole premise of the Honor Code, which is BIG at Rice is that you will never cheat. If you feel you are thinking about it right off the bat, you might not feel comfortable there.

Elrod.. In your original post you suggested that students (plural) should list the top 5 schools. Also, lauras50 is absolutely right. We have an Honor Code, and we take that very seriously.

i think rice can and should be able to confirm whether or not your application (paid for the application) at these other schools...

Elrod.. I think you should answer the application as you suggest by leaving those answers you object to as blank. That will honor your feelings and let Rice admissions know, partially, the person you are. They can then decide if they feel you and Rice are a good fit.
Wanna bet how Admissions will decide???
