So for 'The Box' question I was wondering what exactly should go in? I know it says submit a picture of something that appeals to you. So for example if reading or literature is something that I like should I submit a picture of my bookshelf or of me reading? Like I'm not entirely sure what they're looking for.
Any help is appreciated :)

I think the bookshelf idea is pretty neat, but don’t this part of the application too much. As long as it’s not something obscene or offensive (or too cheesy, like grains of rice) you’ll be fine.

Ok thanks for your help!

Whatever appeals to you works. A bookshelf, you reading, a pile of books, the cover of your favorite book, a library etc etc. are all great options. Pick the one that you find the most interesting and go for it.

Thank you!
and do you think that this portion of the application plays a large role in the decision process?

I doubt it. The box is something that appeals to the applicant, I cannot see how Rice can judge based on such a subjective thing.

I think it is to give some personality to your application. Give a little insight into what you find appealing/interesting.

@kiwi556 I agree with Antarius in that it doesn’t play a ROLE ROLE in admissions because of its nature. I have read somewhere that the Box tradition is so old in the rice admissions office that no one knows why it still continues. its just that: a tradition, a part of rice admissions that every applicant goes through. as long as you put something that is agreeing or consistent with the rest of your app (if you love nature, u have a picture of a valley or something, or if you like reading, you include books/bookshelf) then it will be good as it just confirms something about you. but even with that, don’t look too much into it and try to “outsmart” the admissions for this part because this part of the supplement is not the one to try it with (not saying that outsmarting any part of application is good either)…just my .02 cents

Does Rice superscore the ACT for admissions? I couldn’t find the answer to this on their website.
