So this is for URM only?

What is URM and ORM?

i’m going to second pecos by asking
what ethnicities are in each category? I don’t know which one I am.

URM stands for underrepresented minority. ORM is overrepresented minority.

ORM is Asian, because they are overrepresented in colleges in proportion to their overall population. URM is everything else (African American, Latino, Native American).

I got the vision letter, too. My counselor says that if they are willing to pay air fare, food, transportation, and lodging that it’s likely you’re accepted (knock on wood). I’m so excited for the visit.

Yay! I just registered to be an overnight host!

Just so I’m clear, is the vision weekend just for URM or mostly for URM?

It sounds like Rice gave some likely letters last year in Feb. Does anyone know about this?

My son hasn’t heard anything, but just applied in January. Thanks for any info you may have.

Vision weekend is only for URM. Rice does NOT send many likely letters. And College Conf. posters tend to be the cream of the cream in terms of interest/academics and focus on schools - thus causing anxiety in the rest of the population who reads CC. It may seem that everyone is getting likely letters, paid visit invitations and merit scholarships, but that is not the case. I’m afraid most students will have to wait until April to hear. Relax, chill and enjoy the crazy senior year and all its “last time” events! :)

I haven’t gotten an invitation, and I am a URM. I have pretty good stats, and I really hope I get an invite, but I guess if I haven’t gotten one by now then the chances are slim. :(

does anyone know of a person in the past who received a vision invitation and got rejected?

yeah, i would like to know the same thing that ltalavan10 wants to know. And if they did get rejected, do you know if they did anything like fail a class or anything? thanks

Everyone, stop worrying. If you got an invitation to Vision, you’re IN.

Is it only domestic students that recieve an invitation to Vision or do Americans studying abroad and international students also stand a chance?

An invitation doesn’t gaurantee admission, but it is likely. Also, there have been people who have gone to invitation and later not get accepted, but for these cases it’s been because they have decided to slack off in the spring and get several C’s or one case that I know of, a person decided to get drunk when he came to Vision and well, he wasn’t accepted.

does anyone know how vision weekend works? It says they provide transportation to and from any airport, but what if one of your parents comes? Can they come too, or do they have to find their own ride?

I’m pretty sure the transportation consists of a Rice bus that has limited seating (if I remember correctly from what my son said when he went a few years ago). If there are plenty of seats available when the bus is ready to leave, I wouldn’t think they’d mind your parent riding in with you. But if the bus is full, they wouldn’t let your parent take up the seat that a prospie needed.

Also, keep in mind that the bus is going to take you directly to Rice, where you will stay overnight with a student. Your parent would probably need to go to their hotel, no?

yayayyay I got my plane ticket today. i’m super excited too!

And if you did NOT get an invitation and you are a URM, do not dispair! Rice cannot afford to pay for all students to come and visit. (And before this new-fangled internet, students who weren’t invited would not even have been aware of the fact that other students were being offered to have their visits paid for.) The internet is a mixed bag, since it can also cause more anxiety (and jealously and envy), along with sharing useful information. So please, think positively and get on with your life if you did not get an invitation. I have my fingers crossed that all of you will get accepted and with the financial aid you need to attend! :)

@patsmom thanks, yeah she will be staying at a hotel a mile away

I’ll see you guys there! :D. I still have to make my travel arrangements but I’m excited. I had no clue it was any sort of big deal.
