For all of those who applied to Rice University and attended the Vision 2007 Weekend, I have a question:

Seeing that some people are already recieving invites for the program , is it safe to say that if you are a regular decision applicant that its far less likely for you to get an invite than someone with comparable stats because a large majority of those invited have already been accepted?

Vision Weekend is somewhat like an open house weekend for minority students . My brother attended Vision Weekend back in 2005 and he told me that mostly everyone had been accepted already (this was when Interim decision was still around). Its similar to Owl weekend but is targeted to minorites...

Yeah... a few of my friends that were accepted early decision received notification of their invitation about a week ago. I mean I guess it would be slightly illogical to believe that Rice could sift through thousands of applicants to invite to this weekend...but I still have hope!

Yeah I got an invitation. Since there's no more interim decision, though, I don't think any regular applicants would be invited.. so that may be good news for you in the sense that not getting an invitation doesn't necessarily mean bad news.

Out of curiosity, what did your brother think of Visions?

My brother though Visions was amazing. His hosts were really cool to be aroud and that was what pushed Rice from number 3 on his list to number 1 ...But when that ivy league letter came, he changed his mind fast... I think he accepted the school where he attends now in 2 days of being accepted..

It's directed at under-represented minorities, yeahallie (i.e. not white or Asian). Sorry. They have visiting days for all admitted students later.

I'm glad to see the excitement for Visions! Visions definitely can make or break your decision on whether to come to Rice or not. This year I will be hosting, and everyone is very excited to meet the prospective students. BTW, they are still sending out invites to Visions, so don't lose hope.

Of those invited to Vision 2008, how many of you are minorities? Is anyone from QUESTBRIDGE? BTW, my son will be there from Calif. Anyone else coming from Calif? Is this visit more for the students to check out the school or vise/versa? Are the invites seriously being considered? Thanks in advance for any replys!

Karagon7:
I was invited and am a minority from TX. I am not from Questbridge. From what I gather, this visit is a way to get current admitted minorities excited about Rice, as well as to make Rice the #1 choice for strong regular applicants. While being invited to Vision does not mean your son will be accepted (they haven't started making decisions yet), it does mean that an admissions officer at Rice looked over his application and thought he was a really strong applicant with a decent chance of admission, so it's definitely good news!

Sounds like you have some good info! I'm wondering if you could help me with some travel info. I can't seem to get my son a good flight plan because of the time changes, budget, etc... Is it important to fly into Hobby or is George Bush Ok? Either way, he arrives really late. (like 4:00 pm, and he leaves here at 6:00 am with a 2 hour drive to the airport!) How do you get from the airport to Rice? Any advice would be appreciated. :)

George Bush is okay, 4:00 pm is not too late. In fact I arrived for Visions at around 5:30 and I'm from Houston! I was definitely not the last one; most of the activities do not start until around seven o' clock or six. I'm sure that admissions will be willing to work with you on flight arrangements and transportation, alert them of your concern and they will try to help you. If all else fails, his host will most likely be able to arrange transportation from Bush to Rice for him. Has your son already filled out the mini questionaire on his interests and etc? Although, our (hosts) deadline to turn in our applications are pretty flexible, he could possibly already be matched (it's a long shot, though..but in early Feb. we will know who we have, because we'd be too excited to wait). There is a way of finding out and contacting the host before Visions or even requesting specific people. Best way to go about it is through the secretary that works in admissions, student leaders who are affiliated with the organizations that will be present at Visions (like BSA, Hacer, and etc.) , or those who volunteer with admisions (as in lunch hosts, overnight hosts, greeters, and etc).
