Rising Seniors--Ready to Start Applying?

I spent a whole week at CUA and I really did not like it. Have you visited the campus, sophistry? It all depends on what you are into, but I was very disappointed with my week there. The dorms have pipes going through the room and the showers water is very strong. Also it is a small campus, too. The only thing I did like about the school was that the food was not that bad and the church is beautiful.

Oh gosh, this is scary. My last day of class for junior year was today; I see this when I get home and it really just hit me that I’ll be applying to colleges soon. I don’t even know what I want to major in…I know I’m applying Columbia ED or Yale SCEA, but that’s really it.

I agree! Since I’m applying ED I’ll be applying to colleges in 4 1/2 months (probably around Oct.)

It’s crazy to think that in less than a year I’ll be 18, will have applied, hopefully accepted, and already decided where I’ll be headed in the fall. I’m so scared and so excited!

As where I’m applying, I don’t have very high standards. I haven’t found and reaches where I would like to apply, but that doesn’t bother me.

Marist College
Ithaca College
American U
Marshall (safety)
U Maine (safety)

I am currently unsure of which schools are best for me. I don’t know how to know without being able to visit any of them :(. This year is just one big headache and heartbreak.

I’ve been preparing by relentlessly stalking CC and other college websites.

I pretty much have my Common App essay topic; I just have to brainstorm for it (in writing) soon. I plan on using these four months to study for the SAT so that I don’t have to take it more than once. I’ve made the mistake of waiting until senior year to take it for the first time, which is really bad since I’m applying to Yale early. But at least there are two ACT tests before the November deadline. I took my SAT IIs last week, and I’m hoping I did really well on them so that I don’t have to worry about retaking those. I should probably contact one of my teachers soon so that he can start on my recommendation.

Yeah…I’m going to have Yale’s app, probably Questbridge’s app, research, ECs, and regular school work all at the same time, so I think now is a good time for me to break out of my habit of procrastination or else I’ll pretty much be committing suicide.

KmacNJ, it appears that you are applying to American Uni, huh? It’s my second choice :). It is a beautiful campus (the best I have seen so far–Pepperdine may be better, I’ll find out this summer). It has 2500 different types of plants from all over the world, the IR building is BRAND new (literally one month old), the dorms are nice, the students are very kind, and it is just overall beautiful! I’d say it does look better than GWU, but GWU has an urban feel, it is also in the heart of DC, has a Metro, and one of the best IR schools in the world.

I have a question. Since I am applying ED to a school, should I wait to apply to other schools until I hear back from the school I am EDing to? I am supposed to hear back in December; the Common Application for other schools are not due until January (of course I’ll be completely prepared and have everything ready just in case). I ask this because I do not want to waste $360 applying to all these schools if I get accepted to GWU.

Hm. My list is constantly changing, and with QuestBridge in the picture, all bets are off (free apps! tens of colleges!). If I’m a finalist, I’m not sure if I’ll follow the Match Program. I may stick with Early Action apps for UChicago and Georgetown. Probably. However, the thought of applying Early Action to Princeton, UPenn, Yale, and Stanford through QB’s Match Program is definitely enticing, even if the odds of being accepted are really slim.

All I know that I’m definitely applying to Swarthmore and Bowdoin. I love those schools.

^ Princeton doesn’t have any early admissions programs.

^I’m referring to QuestBridge’s Match Program, which is essentially Early Action for the following participating non-binding schools: Princeton, Yale, Standford, UPenn, and MIT (though I’m not bothering with that one). Through QuestBridge, one can be accepted early to Princeton.

I’m applying to

HYP(S?)
UChicago (EA?)
East Coast and Midwest LACs of varying selectivity

I’m trying to gather up the amour to apply to one of the more selective LACs early decision but no luck so far.

anybody know which of the ivies are non-binding for their EA? I know UMich is nonbinding but they cost so damn much OOS, its weird.

My APP list

 1. Harvard- forthehelluvit. they sent me an app in the mail so ehh might as well
 2. UPenn
 3. Columbia
 4. Northwestern
 5. IU
 6. Purdue
 7. Michigan
 8. Pitt

Also, if a school is common app, then how do we get their supplemental stuff?

I absolutely refuse to get stressed about this. I’ve already secured my recommendations, typed up my resume, started writing my essay (great essay, very original), and semi-finalized my list of colleges. In addition I’m not applying to any “dream” schools where even considering my good stats and everything I’d have to worry about admission and ultimately end up disappointed. The only one I was truly looking at was JHU and I really didn’t like it much, dunno why because the campus was wonderful (probably the ghetto). UMich is the closest thing that I have to a reach as I am OOS.

I hope to be done with the process before most people even start, honestly.

I don’t understand why you guys are applying to so many schools. Contrary to what you may think, you are hurting yourselves and each other by applying to 10-15 schools. You do not increase your chances. Admissions rates have been falling not because there are suddenly more kids, but because the number of applications per student has increased.

applying to florida international and university of miami. not allowed to go out of state, and plus i want to live in miami for a few years. i’m pretty confident about either.

My list:

MIT
Ohio State
Purdue
U Michigan
U Minnesota
U Nebraska
U Texas

I’ll also add one of: Cornell, Northwestern, Princeton, Rice, Stanford to appease my parents.

Ohio State and/or U Michigan could be replaced by Michigan State, U Maryland, or U Washington (probably not Udub).

I will likely apply to Texas A&M and UT-Dallas as well because they are all on ApplyTexas and they offer good NMF money.

U Alberta, U Toronto, and U Waterloo are all Canadian possibilities if I’m not happy with my rolling admissions.

Arizona State, U Arizona, U Oklahoma, U Utah, Utah State, and Washington State are possible safety additions if I’m not happy with my choices.

I’m ridiculously confident about admissions. Merit money will be a little harder.

I need to start looking at app materials…

^ Wow, there is a wide gap between your top college and the rest.

^ I like the Big 10 schools much more. MIT is too expensive but I like the opportunities. The five other elite or semi-elite schools are marginally palatable and one or two should satisfy my parents. Then I can ignore their ridiculous $50k price tags and go to one of my actual favorites.

^ You realize that UMAA is about 47k for OOS students, right? It’s alright though, it’s a great school. Go blue! it’s on my list as well.

noimagination, what is your annual family income (if you don’t mind sharing)?
