Rochester for Econ

I've been researching the University of Rochester for a while now and it comes across a university mainly for science, engineering and pre-med.

How good is the econ program at Rochester? Are a lot of classes taught by teaching assistants?

Rochester is excellent for economics. And very few classes are taught by teaching assistants. Assistants may run the discussion sessions, but classes are taught by professors.

I agree with Chedva. DD2 is taking Principles of Economics this semester which is Econ 108 (the first econ class U of R offers). The class is taught by a prof but her once a week discussion class is taught by a TA.

I’m no longer a college rep (sadly), but Economics at Rochester is outstanding. It’s consistently ranked in the top 20 nationally by numerous publications (e.g. US News). Stanley Engerman, who is an Emeritus Professor, wrote “Time on the Cross,” one of the first books to analyze the economics of slavery. It is a world-renowned book.

One of the best Economics Professors at UR is Steve Landsburg who recently published “More Sex is Safer Sex.” He also writes a column for Salon.com.

Econ at UR is a very solid program, definitely in the top quartile nationally, subjectively speaking (since I think that US news and the rest of the rankings are all BS, but enough ranting.)

PS - Landsburg is one of the best profs UR has. Econ was never part of my studies, but I took a econ class just because of Landsburg. Outstanding lecturer and very well organized.
