@luvthej I agree with you that I’d hope PSU would be more interested in education than US News rankings. I have no idea if the selectivity has something to do with summer admits or not. It’s just what I’ve always “heard”…but you know how that is. Anyone can say anything is true.

I am glad they have the summer program. My D is a great student and has already taken a few PSU New Kensington classes (dual enrollment) and earned A’s in all. She’s taken 8 honors classes, but her school doesn’t weight heavily. So, she has a 3.4 UW and something like a 3.5 weighted with a 28 ACT. She will be borderline for fall admission. She is just under the middle 50% for GPA and on the top end of middle 50% for ACT scores. But she’s already proven she can take the college classes and do very well. I never thought that a 3.5 was a “lower” GPA until I joined CC, lol! So, we are hoping for at least summer admission.
That being said, if it doesn’t work out, then she will do the 2+2. She will be really disappointed and I think it will be hard for her - but she says she would rather go to a branch for 2 years and end up at PSU than go anywhere else.

I think the stats are slowly winding down, I believe about 30+ kids from my school applied to PSU, and about 10 of us have heard back. One kid heard back early November and was immediately deferred to a branch campus, however I can’t really figure out the admissions process since my friend with a 1750 SAT and 4.2 gpa heard back November 3rd, and other kids with much higher stats heard back two weeks after. Anyways, I suspect rejections to start coming out after the holidays

a few things to keep in mind that may make you feel better (although a decision is not guaranteed).
How your D’s HS calculates WGPA is not important. PSU will take the unweighted GPA and weight using their own system. So, a weighted GPA of 3.8 from one school may not be as impressive as a 3.5 from another. Some schools weight “advanced” with one point and honors/AP with 2. Some only give a half point, etc. Others are on 5 pt scales, and so on.
Even two PSU-weighted GPAs may not be viewed the same. PSU has data from hundreds of school districts in PA and surrounding states. They have an idea of the rigor of the school from its profile, transcript and experience. How much the school profile plays in general admissions is a good question. It is considered by SHC. It may only come into play for bubble cases during general admissions.

@jlhpsu haha i had the same reaction when I read the admission acceptance post hearing within 2 weeks on twitter… Thanks for the laugh… Still waiting here…. Like I’ve mentioned several times would have thought my son would have heard already having higher than average stats… Did they take his application from Sept 24th and place it on the bottom of a pile somewhere? I’m really baffled… But then again 4 of his classmates also with higher than average accepted scores haven’t heard either. Makes me feel a little better knowing they didn’t hear yet too guess the saying misery loves company is true here Oh, yet we heard from Schreyers Honors College and he has his interview date set for mid January

Just realized that my DD’s application to PSU said she WOULD apply to Schreyer’s Honors College and she didn’t. She doesn’t want to. Wonder if that is what is holding up her decision. (She applied 10/19/14 and her status has been pending ever since.) We are having her email admissions to find out how she can change that on her application. Anyone else discover a mistake and able to fix it?

@WattsaMattaU yes, you can call or email to update an application. But I believe Shreyers admission is completely separate from regular admissions, so I don’t think that’s what’s holding her up. More likely, it’s just the same waiting game many of us are in. My D applied September 2nd and still no news expected until next month! It’s hard to wait!

@WattsaMattaU jlhpsu is right. The Schreyers Honors College is completely separate so it would have nothing to do with her undergrad admissions decision.

My dd said on the application that she was going to apply to Schreyers and then decided not to. She was accepted at main PSU in the beginning of November. So no worries.

Kind of irritating with January 1st approaching and not hearing from PSU since Sept 24th on son’s admission, we are starting to reconsider applying for additional schools just in case. The reason why we applied so early was to avoid just this in the hopes of having a decision made by now. Not to mention the additional added expense and time.

Last night, I made the mistake of reading close to 1000 posts from last year’s threads, trying to see some pattern. The only thing I can take away from my sleepless night is that it appears they do shut down around a week before Christmas, and then the decisions start again around the 3-4 of January. There are some really heartbreaking posts on those threads – kids who waited forever and then at the eleventh hour got their rejections. But, undecided is definitely the way to go. I wish we had known. A combination of undecided, yes to summer, and an alternate campus seem to raise an average kid’s chances a lot. FYI, my son told me that he heard yesterday that “a bunch” of kids got their decisions on either Friday last week or Monday, and it was a mixed bag. We normally have 60-90 applications per year to UP. checked this morning, and status is still the same.

I definitely would not recommend putting all your eggs in the PSU basket. My daughter has applied to 13 schools now, after she did not get into her first choice, which she applied to ED. (She has submitted her PSU and Villanova apps before the ED one.) She has already received one admission–Scranton, with merit scholarship–so we know she will be going to college somewhere in the fall. Good luck to everyone.

@mamahills - please apply to other schools!

Okay all, it’s been a long wait for many you, but it is coming to an end soon. Take the time to enjoy the break. Come back refreshed with your fingers crossed in January. Wishing you all the best outcome!

@mamahills Our D also only applied to PSU initially. She did end up applying to one more school and was accepted but after looking at it has decided against it. So, all her eggs are in the PSU basket as well. HOWEVER, PSU is unique in that it has the branch campuses. In our case, our D says she’d rather go to a PSU branch for two years than go anywhere else for 4. So, PSU fall admission is her “reach”, summer admission is her best fit, and PSU branch is her “safety”. So really, one school, but three options for her eggs… :-)

If your child only wants main campus then you may want to consider applying other places. If they are willing to do the branch campus in order to go to PSU, then you are probably ok with only one school.

@jlhpsu son waiting to hear from Villanova hopefully in the next few days and a few more. Daughter is a senior at PSU now and he just love UP wouldn’t even consider another campus. Thought PSU as a safety school really and that Schreyers was the real FAR reach. Like you mention, I suppose once he gets his first acceptance we will feel much better. BTW, does anyone know when admissions will stop updating portal for holiday break and when they will resume up again? Will give us all a break too

@WattsaMattaU let me know if child gets accepted to VillaNova… Looks like we will be hearing soon from Nova and before PSU. Have a happy and healthy holiday everyone. God Bless!!

Semester ends this Friday. I’m not sure if they are still updating at this point or have at all this week.
Classes resume on January 12th. This would be my best guess. The portals might be set to update the night before (?).

Does anyone know when they actually stop updating and start up again??? Truly cannot focus on this holiday season without hearing from them… this is honestly getting annoying! But, I hope it’s worth the wait :)

just got off the phone with admissions and a very nice lady told me that they will be out from 12/23 thru Jan 5th. I asked her about waiting so long to hear from Smeal since 9/24 and she said the majority of all applicants have not heard yet and that I shouldn’t be concerned and a bulk of them should notified when they return from break. So January it is…

Does anyone know if the admission office will not be working during the winter break? I know the students get 3-4 weeks off, and I wonder if the decisions will be postponed until after the break. That means another month of waiting…

What makes it especially hard is that my kid is interested in a school that offers ED2 but it’s due Jan. 1. We figured we’d hear from PSU before them but now know we won’t. PSU is kids first choice, but ED2 school is a very close second and kid would be thrilled to go there too; so now it becomes a strategy game, as the odds of getting into ED2 are much higher than RD, and PSU could go either way. If only we knew what the decision was going to be! (Sigh)
