@greatwhiteway is the ED2 school binding? If so that does make it really tough! You could always wait to hear from PSU then apply RD to other school, right?

@Sunrise97 admissions will return long before students do. Admissions is back at work Jan 3rd. If you applied by Novembe 30, the only guarantee you have is that you will hear prior to January 31st!

@jlhpsu Yea my gpa isn’t like top 10% or bottom 10%. My school is a very competitive school (yea howard county…) and my SATs weren’t high because English is not my main language. My GPA is just above the 50% mark (3.93 weighted, the reason why is that low is because it’s hard for me to get straight As in physics AP mech, calc, emag, etc). well i just hope i get accepted into the college of engineering…

Well here we are on January 1st. We all know one thing for sure…we will have answers sometime in the next 30 days!
Here’s to good news for all of the applicants waiting!
Happy New Year! Regardless of the outcome for anyone here, there aare bright futures ahead.
Ok…I know everyone will be happy when we finally hear so that I quit posting about waiting, lol…but I just have to vent and this is pretty much the only thread to do that in since we are all in the same boat. I just read a post on the decision thread where someone was accepted already and they applied AFTER November 30th!! HOW can PSU do that when they have a priority deadline? Granted, the applicants stats were good and they deserved admission - I am just baffled by the entire process. And a little irritated.
jlhpsu…I’ve been here months reading your posts and those of many others…even remember when someone suggested you start the decision thread…honestly…you seem to think there’s some inherent “fairness” you are entitled to in this process…and that’s just not how certain things work, including the psu admissions process. And we all should already know this. And some people are used to it in everyday life. PSU is a great school, but there are many others both in the state (from a cost perspective) and in the area. They’re just kids going for bachelor’ degrees. Often times a second, third etc. choice works out better. The process is arbitrary, uncertain, and in some cases stressful. Let’s not have little “mini meltdowns” and entitled tantrums. We’ll all be better off. Cheers
@ozzieD Umm…entitled tantrums? Seriously? I expect that when a school claims they are rolling and that they have a priority deadline, then they will actually abide by that. What is the possible reason for having a priority deadline if it doesn’t matter? I’ve never said I expected a first come first served process. But i do expect a much publicized priority deadline to mean something. I don’t care what your stats are…if you don’t care enough about being admitted to get your application in prior to the deadline, then you should have to wait behind those who applied priot to priority deadline. I won’t apologize for expecting better from such an important process.
You say, with implied exasperation, that you have been reading my posts for months. But that doesn’t mean you know a thing about me. Or what ‘entitlement’ I feel (fyi…none). Fairness, yes. I expect fairness in something as big as college admissions. I do not think my daughter is better nor more deserving than anyone else. I’ve never said such a thing. In fact, I’ve continually said that she’s a borderline candidate. But PSU is her only choice for many reasons…none that I have shared or believe i need to. For the purposes of this board I have simply said its her #1 choice. We are feeling a lot of anxiety here…tremendous anxiety…and I said that I was venting. I would not consider my post to be a “mini” or any other kind of meltdown. I was expressing frustration with an arbitrary process that is supposed to be anything but. I am sorry my posts bother you, but since I claimed I was just venting, It would have been nicer to say nothing than pile on with condescension and incorrect conclusions about my “entitlement”.
What I’m saying is, your daughter lined up earlier, and so you expect her decision to be processed sooner.
And by now you should have ample evidence that it doesn’t work that way. I provided an explanation as to why that makes sense. Again, what if all the early applicants were not qualified, or less qualified. Why should the school take them over more qualified candidates, simply because they applied sooner?
If you are wondering about my daughter, she applied in August. Her transcripts and SAT scores were sent in September. By the numbers, she could get in. Or not. We’ll see soon enough I guess.
Applications weren’t available until September 1st. So she didn’t apply in August.
That being said, you obviously don’t feel the same anxiety as some of us do, and that’s wonderful. I’d be much happier if I had a “whatever” approach to this. But I dont.
If you have read my posts, you would know that I have many many many times informed others that it’s not a first in first out process. I have taken notes during the chats and shared transcripts saying exactly that. But, a priority deadline should mean something. That’s what my post was about. I cannot imagine that I am the only parent or applicant who is disheartened to hear that someone who applied after priority has already heard. It makes priority deadline a meaningless concept. And yea, that bothers me. If a university publishes a priority date…and some kids work their buts off to make that date, it should mean something. And no, they do not or are not supposed to “save space” for better qualified applicants. That would be a completely different process than “rolling” or “priority dates” that PSU says they abide by. If you apply in April with a 4.0 and 2200 SAT to engineering, chances are, you will be denied. Read the prior years threads. Happens every year. THOSE are the people with entitlement issues in my opinion.
I am a PSU grad as is my husband, and I expected a better process from the University I love so much. Not for ME or my daughter, but for EVERYONE. This is our first experience with PSU on this side of things and it’s disappointing. And as others have pointed out here numerous times, it is a process that falls way short in comparison to other big flagship schools.
You joined today, so welcome to CC. You will find many different people here with many different opinions and backgrounds. Best of luck to your daughter.
I’m sorry. You are 100% correct. My daughter applied in early October. We sent in several applications to other schools in August, but not PSU in that first wave.
Since my daughter was denied at Ohio State, which was her number one choice, she has gotten over it. PSU is now her number one choice, but not with certainty, and she’s in at some very good schools. Any of them will be great. We’ll see how the process unfolds, what the $$ are, which campus she feels most comfortable, which programs fit her best, and ultimately make a decision like everybody else. It’s a process.
I guess there are some people who “demand integrity” (for the kids!) and others who know Marketing when they see it. And maybe we all fall somewhere in between.
I checked. Last year my daughter applied to the Engineering program before the cutoff. She was accepted Jan 7th (Super high GPA, meh test scores) Great EC’s but they did not count at PSU. EC’s got her into selective LAC’s. So for the January decision round she was one of the early ones. She goes there now. If you think the admission process is frustrating wait until she signs up for freshman classes. Word of advice…early orientation.
Really looking forward to seeing some acceptance activity. The wait since early Sept has been rough. Looking at last years thread I saw a comment that one of the last counselors to process applications was J branch… he is ours so I am anticipating still a longer wait… more like end of month… But it is ok… Once I see some of the stats from those hearing in Jan it will give us a better feel for our D… I will be sure to tell people applying next year to just get app in by 11/30 or if apply earlier be prepared to hear in Jan… Advice given to us from prior applicants in our area was just “apply early, and apply first week of sept as soon as you can”… Oh well… I didn’t post in the Decision thread because I am just venting on the wait here… AAAAARUGH
@judyvegas I hear you!! We heard the same thing about applying early, etc…my D applied 9/2 and has had the “reviewing criteria” status since 9/8. How do you know who your admission counselor is? I have no idea who ours is or when they process applications. Obviously not early, lol!
We are nearing the end of the road though and I hope it’s all been worth it! We are very anxious as it could go either way for our D. But it’s the not knowing that is so hard for everyone I think. At least when we know either way, we can move forward with a plan…
And don’t worry about venting here. We are all in the same boat and most of us feel the same.
@jlhpsu. We know who the counselor is because it is the rep from PSU that comes for various events at our HS. Our school each year has a panel of college counselors from different schools to discuss their individual school’s admission process to students and parents. The same reps come during the school day usually in the fall to meet with students to answer questions and our school advises students to go to meet the reps because they are the ones reviewing their application. Of course when PSU came my daughter had a conflict and could not meet the PSU counselor .On a prior thread somewhere I recall that the counselors are really familiar with the districts they represent to give perspective on issues of WGPA, grading scales, rank etc… and this could explain why. So if you have 1 rep from PSU that frequents your HS… that is probably who processes apps. J Branch’s mantra at everything has been consistent… admission based on GPA, class rank, SAT… (which we all know!) can’t wait to hear about your daughter…I have said it before but I love all your posts!
@judyvegas Is your rep based at UP? We are in NY and have a regional rep who is based here and visits schools and does college fairs, but I always wondered if the regional reps review applications. Does anyone know?
@judyvegas we are in PA only about 2 hours from UP so I don’t think they send reps to our school. I think if you live close enough to visit then they don’t send specific reps. So I have no idea who ours is…but I think that’s probably good. One more factor to think about may have just sent me over the edge, lol!
January 18th and still nothing! I was really hoping to see more activity on this site over this weekend based on what’s happened in previous years. But, less than 2 weeks to go, right? I think when my D’s status actually does change I won’t even believe it because she’s had the same status for over 4 months, lol. I will probably have to read it twice. But I know that day is coming soon for all of us still waiting. It’s been a frustrating wait but regardless of the outcome, I think my D (and me) will just be relieved to know something.
