Rolling admission

Just learned that udel changed their admission notification to a rolling admission. No more laborious waits til march. Decisions will happen much quicker this year. A good move.

This is a dramatic change over past years. I see from their admission website that for all freshman applicants decisions will typically be made 8-12 weeks once they have received all the components required for the application. So at the earliest one could hear would be mid to late November (but I doubt many applications will be totally complete with all components required before the end of this month). So my guess would be that December is the earliest when we should begin to see a significant number of acceptance notifications. Good luck to all applicants. I wonder if merit aid announcements will also be made within the same time frames.

wow wow wow!!! you guys just made my day! I did not know this. My son will be happy. UD was basically going to be his last decision he would be waiting for as most of the schools he’s applying to have rolling or at least early non binding decisions. Now the push to get those apps sent!

We went into the application process assuming my son had until January 15 to apply. He was planning to take a final try to improve a standardized test score in late October. In order for that test to be considered, I think he would need to wait until late November to apply. Does anyone think that there is an admissions advantage in applying way ahead of the deadline, other than getting a decision earlier?

I’ve been in several admissions presentations where the presenter has explained that it is better to apply as early as possible with rolling admissions. If I recall correctly, the reasoning was that the class gets filled with very good candidates in the beginning and there’s only room for excellent candidates near the end of the process.

My son applied to UD just before taking the October 5th SAT. There was some kind of check box on the Common App website to show schools that he was scheduled for the 10/5 test and that scores would be sent as soon as they were available. His reasoning for applying early was to get his information to the school for consideration as quickly as possible with the pending SAT score available if needed to swing a decision his way. Assuming there’s improvement, of course.

This is great news, my daughter’s wait for UD which was her top school till March was horrible since she heard from all the others by December. My son is applying this year and his application is all in; however, he is a music major and audition is not till Feb 5. Kind of not fair to these kids.

Great move by UD. I’m sure they saw they were losing a lot of their top applicants because of the long wait. Students had already fallen in love with the other schools they were accepted to by the time the UD decision came. Good strategy.

Good luck to all those applying now! My DD will be graduating this Spring. I can’t believe it!

My son’s 10/5 SAT scores are available so his UD application is now complete. It will be interesting to see how fast he gets a decision. Two UD OOS tuition bills… I’m not sure I’m ready for that!

Fauster:
Good luck to your son. Hopefully he will be notified on the early end of the 8-12 weeks UD has identified as the time frame for hearing about a decision. It certainly would be nice to start off the New Year with a UD acceptance. Then comes the decision about whether to attend or not. At least you have some familiarity with how UD does things and the quality of education a student can get at UD. If I am not mistaken from some of your previous posts (if I recall correctly) your D is a Biomedical Engineering major at UD. If you don’t mind me asking is your son interested in the same major, a different one, or is he undecided? If he is interested in some type of Engineering he may have some advantages over other entering Engineering majors due to his sister’s experiences also majoring in an Engineering area and being two years ahead. In any event again good luck to him. I assume he has at least some interest in attending UD.

Son is going to pursue a Doctor of Physical Therapy graduate degree and has identified several schools (like UD) with strong undergrad programs. I was surprised that he considered UD since most siblings would want to have their own ‘space’. To his credit, he’s using his brain. And he likes the place.

I agree with LINYMOM that it was a great move for UD to adopt rolling admission decisions. Of the six schools where he applied, five have rolling or early action admissions. UD was going to be the last one to respond. Now they’re in the mix.

I guess we’re getting into the time frame where the first few decisions should be made regarding UD admissions. Mwallenmd, it might be time for a Class of 2018 accepted student thread!

Hoping for a response before Christmas.

Fauster:
Soon, very soon. My best “guess” is we will start to hear about some acceptances around the middle of the month. UD, like most all colleges, has had problems with interfacing with the Common App. So this is just complicating the new rolling admission process UD has implemented this year. Good luck to all applicants.

hoping for an answer soon as well for my S App was submitted Oct 14 but only about two weeks ago his portal was complete. We check it regularly but no changes so far. It’s amazing how much the common app has delayed things this year for schools. It took until this past week for my S to get confirmation from all his schools that they had all his materials.

Does anyone know if admissions reads and uses first term (quarter) grades for the admission decision? Son’s high school sent them a week or so ago. They’ve had the transcript through junior year since late October.

not sure but interested to know… our school usually sends first semester grades but not quarter. only one school my son applied to specified they wanted first quarter grades.

@uriman Most schools that are rolling admissions will consider any piece of academic information sent. Therefore, if your son had a strong first quarter, it would be beneficial to send that transcript.

Now that there’s some history out for this year’s admission process, I think it’s safe to say that UD is employing a batch admission process vs. a rolling admission process. The first batch was pre-Christmas and the second batch was mid-January.

It’s definitely an improvement over the old method.

I am guessing that this new process has some evolving to do. Between the new system, the common app snafu, and who knows what else…I expect the process will get better next year. I know for a fact they were not prepared administratively for the change. My D worked part time in the admission office last semester. It was a mess. They had a hard time getting all the info into the system. I think it will improve more next year…

This new decision is great! I applied mid November and found out i got in yesterday!
