I'm wondering how high the ceilings are in the dorm rooms, especially in the Bluestone dorms.

It really depends on what dorm you're in. For example, I'm going to be in Hoffman next year for the honors learning community and the ceilings are relatively high, but not really high enough for a loft (I'm assuming that's why you want to know how high they are?). As for the other Bluestone dorms, I don't really know.

Daughter will also be at Hoffman and a loft was a question we had.

Lofts should fit into dorm rooms pretty well. If the loft you have is the loft is the standard one that is rented from some company at JMU, then in terms of the loft in general, it will fit. However, there is not alot of head room, but it is bearable. I would estimate roughly around 2-3 ft? (give or take)

I must let you know that having a loft was convenient, and a good investment, but it does get extremely hot if you do not have AC. I would recommend buying some kind of attachable FAN to place on the rail, or a standing fan that can angle towards the top bunk.

i lived in a different bluestone dorm last year and I know plenty of people who had lofts. theres never much room, when you use lofts, no matter where you use them on-campus. people were fine with that though. if ure on top, you have room to sleep, i just wouldnt plan on having a party up there.

So....I should build the loft myself and allow exactly 8 inches between the top of the mattres and the ceiling.

I didn't know there were lofts to rent. I will have to check those out. I was planning to take measurements and build one, then bring it to her in a week or two.

There's a good amount of info on the Residence Life pages - go to JMU Residence Life - Incoming Freshmen

If you click on "move in/out" and select "Lofts", you'll get info on the company that offers loft rentals and purchase options.

I think we're going to rent one through TimberNest - the company JMU recommends. Go the www.timbernest.com and look at student accounts. PM me if you need the JMU code. They look pretty simple - not pretty but simple. The ceiling height for all the dorms is listed on the res life webpage - there is also info about lofting on there - there is a minimum amount of space you have to allow between bed and ceiling and I think they do inspect them. My D is in Potomac and the ceilings are over 9' high there so no problem.

What do you do with the beds you don't use when you loft - take them apart and stack them someplace?

definitely look at the link to the JMU Residence Life -- Incoming Freshman posted above. They give very specific requirements for loft size, height, space between the top of the loft and the ceiling, etc... Good Luck! :)
