roommate selection?

I assume UVA does the typical "fill-out a generic questionairre and fit together who-ever works" blah blah...but I was just wondering what specifically these questions are that will determine our first college roommates, anyone know?

Moreover, does UVA really use those applications or is the process totally random?

they ask a very generic set of questions

1) Are you a smoker?
2) How neat do you expect your room to be? (Messy/Semi Neat/Neat)
3) Are you a morning or night person?
4) What do you expect your room to be used for? (Study/Mix/Social)

We don't know how they actually match people. You can be sure that they won't put a non-smoker with a smoker though.

interesting column from the school paper about race in first year dorms.

http://cavalierdaily.com/CVArticle.asp?ID=28818&pid=1522

i've noticed they they generally assign people by hall. all the people on my hall had the same answers for all four questions. don't say that you are a morning person unless you are TRULY a morning person. most people in the "morning" hall go to bed by 12. it is pretty quiet there at night.

haha, whatever you do...don't put something on your form like "no black people, please."
my next door neighbor (who goes to UNC-Pembroke) did that...and guess what? He's in a triple with two black guys.
Serves him right. But I do feel bad for the two guys who have to live with a racist.

LMAO^
pretty funny

You can probably put "No Gay", because that is at least slightly reasonable.

unfortunately that probably right mdt89, however 40-50 years ago the same would have been said about the "no blacks" comment. hopefully gays will be accepted as well as ethnicity has (yes yes, i know. racism is still present...but not as much or openly as homophobia)

Honestly, this comment might come off as homophobic (and I assure you, I am not) but I really don't see the problem for a straight man to be uncomfortable living with a gay man. Would I mind? no, but I can understand the viewpoint.

^I'd understand too.

i know i'm way late here, but... whatever

laxguy... every year there is talk about the diversity in first year housing.

no the process isn't completely random, the questions protean posted are used to try to give students the opportunity to live with a somewhat compatable person.

no, housing doesn't try to assign people based on race or ethnicity.

i'd rather see a study to explain why the distribution is so similar each year without blaming the actual assignments. why are more people of X [description] putting A[dorm] as their first choice and not B[dorm]. or why are more people of Y [description] saying they want the room to be for studying. etc.

good point, wazhoom

and thread resurrection ftw
