So I'm considering CC with the hopes of going to UCB, UCLA, USC, or NYU (maybe apply to some really tough privates/ivys for the hell of it). I took 9 AP classes and passed them all, and I took 4 CC classes already. I'm going to go for a business/econ major and after calculating all the credits through IGETC I found out I already have around 40/60 credits done with only 5 mandatory classes to complete.

Which brings me to my main question, can I rush these classes over summer/first semester than just focus on ec's and not even take any classes second semester? Do colleges expect a rigorous curriculum like high school, where getting a 4.0 in the minimum will not get you into a good college? In other words, can I take like 2 classes a semester to finish up my credits and will colleges accept that or should I be going above and beyond, ignoring my previous credits, and just piling up on 6-8 classes a semester and end the year with like 80-90 credits... How does NYU hold up to all of this? (Since they don't have IGETC)

Any help/feedback would be greatly appreciated!

I can’t comment on the private institutions, but for the UCs the amount of units you take per term is irrelevant. I took only 2 classes my last term and was admitted to UCLA. I also had a term where I was considered part-time, and a few where I took near the minimum number of units to qualify as full-time. I think the expectation is that as an older CC student you sometimes have other important commitments outside of just academics for example, an actual career, a family, etc. They aren’t necessarily expecting you to have no life aside from building your academic resume because a lot of CC students aren’t financial dependents that are completely supported by their parents like in high school. Many have real life commitments to take care of in addition to CC.

Also, just in case you aren’t aware business econ and econ are impacted at UCLA and are probably two of the most competitive majors in the college of L&S. I’ve seen a few posts here that even applicants with perfect 4.0s and all the pre-reqs finished have been rejected to those majors at UCLA. Instead of taking extra classes, you may want to consider strengthening your ECs, maybe your CC has a business club or you can get an internship. Also if you really want to get into UCLA, consider your school’s honors program so that you can apply TAP certified. It usually just requires completing a few honors classes. The advantage of TAP at UCLA is that they’ll evaluate you for admission to your alternate major if you get rejected to your first choice. UCLA doesn’t evaluate students for their second alternate major without TAP, even though there will be a place to choose an alternate on the UC app. For a major like business econ/econ (avg admitted GPA 3.9+) that are really competitive it may be advantageous to do TAP and choose an alternate major like Math Economics (avg admitted GPA 3.69), which has a significantly higher admit rate. At least the would give you the option of still getting into UCLA to something similar if you get rejected.

Thanks for your reply, do you know how Ap credits work? I passed all my AP tests but I got B’s in some of the classes. Do they look at my high school GPA if I got to CC for a year?

What good is focusing on ECs 2nd semester going to do you? The apps are due in the fall. All you’d be able to do is list things you “plan” to do (and I’m not sure if the app even has a place to list planned ECs, as opposed to what you’ve actually done). For all intents and purposes, I think that time would be invisible in terms of admissions.

Furthermore in order to get the priority CCC students get to UC they say
So with your plan it seems like you’ll fail to meet these requirements on 2 counts: didn’t enroll for 2 terms, and you didn’t complete enough units at the CC

As to whether they look at HS GPA, I suggest you spend some time reviewing the material the UCs have put online about transfer students to understand the rules; I think you’ll find your answer.

I plan to work on me EC’s throughout the year, but I’m not doing them solely for college, so I will certainly work on them after applications.

Also regarding the 2 things that make me “illegible” for IGETC:

The first one, credits, I have around 29.5 AP credits, but definitely below 30. On top of that, I took 2 CC classes during highschool, and I’m taking 2 more before I graduate. Then I will finish my remaining classes as a real CC student. My point here is, I will have done 30.5 or so credits in CC, which is above the 30 credits required.

The second one, taking few to no classes if possible was just an idea, if I can’t do that, can I take stupid easy classes like band and cooking? (Assuming my 60 credits are done, this is just to stay enrolled in the school as a student)

UCBhoeful I did look for other threads, my specific question isn’t just can you transfer in a year, I have many friends who have. My question is since I have many AP credits and I’ve already done 4 college classes, can I still be a competitive applicant given that to complete the rest of my PRE RECS I only need to take 4-6 classes, which can be spread out over 2 semesters and a summer term, which equates to 1-2 classes a term. This is obviously a very very light course load, and I would have a high chance at a 4.0, but I’m curious to know if my 4.0 taking 6 classes holds the same weight as someone else who got a 4.0 taking 15 classes. In the end I still worked hard, taking 9 AP’s is not easy, however idk how it works for transfering.
