Hello! I am about to make a decision where I want to go for college (Pharmacy major).
I'm considering University of the Sciences in Philadelphia but the tuition is about $43,000. (money is an issue)

Also, I'm considering to take prerequisite classes for in Rutgers University and then transfer into their pharmacy school, which I heard is quite tough. I'm considering this school because I got some money that decreased the tuition. I'm in on the waiting list for pharm as well. (I hope I get a chance)

Which seems more reasonable? Should I go through the 6yr program, or take the PCATs and transfer into a pharm school?

You're input is greatly appreciated!
Thanks so much!

Did you get accepted into Rutgers Pharmacy school or not? I would suggest do pre-pharm at a cheaper rate. Then transfer to a good pharmacy program of your choice. And why USP? There are tons of similar universities that are well respected and offer more scholarships. It just requires some searching.

First, thanks for the response!
As of now, I’m on Rutgers Pharm’s waiting list until they notify me of my final status.

I chose USP because it’s one of the most prestigious pharmacy schools in the nation and it’s a straight through 6 year program.

I was always considering doing pre-pharm at a cheaper rate but I was just skeptical if I didn’t make it into the pharm school of my choice (rutgers pharm). I was thinking if I go to USP, I would be secured a spot as long as my grades are acceptable.

“There are tons of similar universities that are well respected and offer more scholarships,” you said. Do you have any suggestions?

In pharmacy, are you planning to work in pharmacy store or in clinical research? If you plan to work in a store, school reputation after graduation rarely matters (correct me if I am wrong).
Some of the good pharmacy school that come to my mind right now are: Purdue, University of Pittsburg, U. of Washington, Michigan… You can check the rankings of the pharmacy schools but do not entirely depend on them.

USP is well respected but with money as an issue, there is no need to take loans for private when there are tons of good public pharmacy schools.

I was planning to to work in a hospital or do clinical research after graduation. Here, I thought school reputation mattered (correct me if I’m wrong as well).

Thanks so much for the list! I’ll be researching them for potential transfer schools :)

I JUST heard about the 2+4 pharmacy program today. (very late b/c i have to decide where i want to go in 2 weeks!). And apparently I was SUPPOSED TO APPLY in order to get into it. Is there another way I can do pharmacy through Rutgers and get in the 2+4 program? (LOL, as you can tell, I really wanted to go to Ernest Mario)

For both USP and Rutgers, if you get accepted, you are automatically guaranteed admission into their 4 Professional year track. So, it is 0-6 for both of them once you get accepted.

thanks for the answers so far, collegebiomed!
I was just wondering if I can send in my deposit for USP and then wait for Rutgers pharm’s decision. If I possibly get into Rutgers, can I enroll?

Yeah, I’d advise that you hold your spot in USP first for safety’s sake (especially if the deadline is coming up), and then withdraw/enroll in Rutgers if they accept you.

That’s great to hear because I’m still praying for a spot in Rutgers! Thanks!

1) I know this question has been asked a million times, but is it easy to transfer to Rutgers pharm after 2 years?

2) And the deadline to make a decision is May 1st. Do I send that paper to make a decision for Rutgers or hold onto it?

3) If I do get into Rutgers (dream come true!), do I still have to take placement tests when everyone will have taken them by then?

Honestly, no…it’s not easy to transfer into any of the pharmacy six year programs because of how they take students straight from HS. You could look into other pharmacy programs that are more highly ranked than RU and don’t take students straight from HS.

I’m not too sure what you mean by the second question (sorry if I’m being really obtuse – my brain has been fried from several exams in a row and then a pile of work this weekend). Are you talking about accepting your place at USP for now or maintaining your spot on the waitlist for RU?

And you probably do have to take the placement tests, although I wouldn’t worry about them…they’re /really/ easy.

Thanks for your feedback again! I appreciate it :)

For the second question, yes, I’m talking about securing my spot in USP and still waiting for an answer from Rutgers in June/ July. (I might have worded it oddly! Sorry for that!) If I’m still waiting for Rutgers, do I send in the decision? (saying I’m going to the school or not)
