Rutgers Pharmacy - What are my chances?

Hi everyone! I'm a senior in HS and trying to apply to 6-year pharmacy programs: Rutgers, U of Texas at Austin, and St John's.

Rutgers is my first choice obviously. ;)

So, here are my stats. I would like know my chances of getting in each school and how much scholarship $ I'd get (particularly Rutgers).

GPA: weighted 3.3 (Got 5 C's freshman and sophmore year...)

Percentile: somewhere around 50% in a class of 400 (cuz of those C's...)

SAT I: reading: 750 math: 750 writing: 740

SAT II: US History: 740 Physics: 720

Current courses for senior year:
AP Statistics
Honors English
AP Physics B
Calculus
AP European History

APs:
AP Statistics
AP Physics B
AP European History
AP US History (Still waiting for exam results; probably got a 4)

Extracurriculars/Clubs:
Fencing Team (for one year only tho; I wouldn't put that on my resume)
Wind Symphony (at my school)
Area Band
County Youth Orchestra
NJ Youth Symphony
Church? (I've been an active member in the same church since I was 5)

Volunteer Work:
Shelving books once a week at the public library
Summer internship for 2 months collecting data in a biochem lab with a PhD mentor

Additional Info: I'm asian and live in NJ (in-state)

I'm getting letters of recommendation from my science research teacher, my english teacher, and my mentor during my summer internship.

I'm also planning on entering in science competitions like Intel and Seimens but that will be after I apply to college so I'm not sure if it matters.

My weakness is obviously my GPA. I'm worried because the classes I got C's in were geometry, biology, algebra, and chemistry and those seem to be major classes for pharmacy school.

My GPA junior year was 3.9 - almost 4.0. I got an A in physics, but would people care?

Essay is optional at rutgers; should I write one?

Thanks in advance!

Despite the Cs, at least you improved during junior year, and you’re continuing to take difficult classes. Your SAT score is quite strong, so that’s good too. Definitely do the essay. Since Rutgers is rolling admissions, it would help if you applied early too.

I’m not sure how much scholarship money you’d get, since Rutgers apparently doesn’t base it on SAT scores and GPA anymore. The financial aid website says that they look at your overall record. That might help you. Good luck!

actually rutgers does base their scholarships on gpa, more rank, and sat score. They dont start giving out money until you hit the top 10% of ur class. and rutgers pharm is pretty hard, but u have pretty solid sat scores, the only problem is ur rank =/

Rutgers did base their scholarships on class rank and SAT score, but it seems it will not be that way anymore for the incoming freshman class: [Rutgers | Rutgers Admissions](http://admissions.rutgers.edu/Costs/Scholarships/FirstYearScholarships.aspx)

you won’t get any merit scholarship so don’t count on that. other than that, i guess it depends … most people who get in have better stats though.

niteangel, these are 3 of the most competitive 0-6 programs there are and they are very numbers driven. The mismatch between your SAT and GPA will hurt, even though you are an instate candidate for Rutgers. You should also investigate and apply to the 2+4 schools that give good early assurance guarantees. There’s a list on the aacp website.

It also seems that sciences are not your strength…are you sure pharmacy is for you? There are very few electives in the 0-6 programs and you may be better off with a less rigid structure which will leave you the freedom to explore other courses that interest you. If you haven’t already, you could also arrange to shadow a pharmacist or two - perhaps in a hospital and a privately owned pharmacy - to get a better feel for the field.

Btw, do not look at the average acceptance rates or the application deadlines for the school in general - the Pharmacy School is usually different and you must follow their specific guidelines!

dont know anything about pharmacy program but i would absolutely put fencing down on your resume.

i mean honestly how many high school kids do fencing. it stands out (even if u only did it for one year)

plus even though it says optional, do the essay it could be deciding factor between you and someone else…
