Rutgers S.M.A.R.T (Science Medicine and Related Topics) Worth it or Not?

Hi,

I’m a newbie and this is my first post here on CC. My dd (HS Sophomore) has been accepted to Rutgers S.M.A.R.T program for Winter 2020. She aspires to become a physician and trying to get as much hands-on experience on medical field by exploring lab, clinical, research and enrichment programs around Northeast. Anyone taken the S.M.A.R.T program at Rutgers? Is that worth the time and travel (1hr and 30 mins 1-way) for the program with the experience she will get out of it? Her schedule is conflicting with her Volunteering at hospitals, so would like to make sure if this is truly an enrichment course to not miss ?
If you had taken the course previously, can you also please include,

  1. what you gained from the program ?
  2. how it helped in your college admission process and interviews?
P.S: I searched CC for this program and came back with empty results.
    Thank you

Do not take SMART ( 6th grade +) , but take mini-med for high school instead.

It is not hands on, but great interaction with med students . And professors gave out short lectures 1.5 hrs on different topics.

3 hours is a long drive, and if you have to give up hospital volunteer… I would not do it.

You could consider mini-med junior year too

Thank you @orm2020 for the recommendation on mini-med. Will check out for Junior year.

The best part is small group discussion with med students coming from different colleges. As long as you register and get teacher recommendation early, first come first serve.

This seems like most other programs being offered by medical schools to mentor underrepresented type of students in medicine.

In my personal opinion, if your child is already doing all the things focused on medicine, it is not needed. If the goal is make contacts and get opportunities for summer research etc, it might be worth while, assuming that is actually happening in the program.

You may get better input on how the program has helped people in high school forums. I am not able to decide where to transfer this topic to and so leaving it here for now.
