RV Parking

We have a RV (tow behind travel trailer) and noticed at Parent's weekend they had a section "roped" off for RV Parking.

Someone had a pop-up set up, so I figure they were there for the weekend, and we saw about 3 other RV's - hooked up to the electric too!

How do you go about getting that authrorization. It would definately save me some money if I could convince my hubby to tow the RV to Kings Point, than staying at a hotel. It was a little over $1000, for this past weekend.... we need two rooms for the 6 of us! Ugh....

Once I figure out the paperwork, then I will work on hubby.

dont do it your kid wants as far away from here as possible...

hmmmm, more to think about there, thanks for your input KP10. Of course we would discuss this more with our son before we would ever do such a thing.

but from my perspective, it would save us a huge chunck of change. Even with the price of gas @ $3/gal it would cost us about an additional $100 in gas with pulling the camper vs just driving our van.

so the over all savings is at least $900... that is HUGE amount of money.... plus this would allow me to bring some of our food from home which I am sure my son would LOVE. Ya know, I could cook for us with my OWN stove, oven, gas grill, microwave, refrig, freezer. (not to say that I WOULD cook for us, but we would have that option)

And we could STILL go out to eat and have a great time.

Plus my little ones (and ME) would feel so much better being in their own beds, would eliminate all the stresses of a hotel room. Can you say germophobia? bed bug fear? dirty sheets? YUCK!

But of course we would suck it all up and spend the money if my son wanted to get away, but I really think he would like this idea too. We shall see.....

It sounds like you stayed in the same place as we did last weekend! For 140 a night I thought things would be a little nicer.

Maybe there is a campground on LI that you coud stay at. That would get him off campus and still help save money.

I forgot how exspensive it can be going into the city. Cokes were nearly 4 bucks in the restaraunts we went into in Little Italy.

I did try to research campgrounds on LI, but really found nothing but county parks, which to me would seem REALLY hard to get into.

The hotel we stayed at was $179/night + taxes = $200/night * 3 nights * 2 rooms = 1200.00 but because they didn't clean our one room one day, DH complained (remember the germophobia... that's him) and they took 20% off our entire bill. The hotel was nice enough, the room kinda small, but they didnt grant my request of adjoining and/or connecting rooms, even tho I have little ones.

I get "icked out" about germs too. I like to see very clean looking sheets and the ones we had were old and worn enough that they did not look clean. and when my son unfolded a hand towel it appeared to have some lipstick on the edges; it looked like it was used, refolded and reracked and the maids did not take it down when they cleaned.

I understand that most of us have healthy enough immune systems to get over the vast majority of what might be on pre used sheets, but the thought!!

Hey I got that way seeing the security people going in and out of bag after bag. I was relieved I wasn't "invited" to have my bags inspect. Who knows what germs lurked in all those other bags that were searched before mine!!

I'd be upset about not having adjoining rooms with the age of yours also. I wouldn't feel my kids (at their age) were safe unless I or my husband were in the room with them. And a good hotel would understand that and make an effort to accomodate this, even if it meant moving you the following day.

What hotel did you stay at? We stayed at the Best Western in Woodbury and I wouldn't reccomend it. There is a Marriot Fairfield Inn out that way which we will try next year. My understanding is BW can be independently owned where as the Marriot lines can not and therefore there will be more uniformity in what to expect in the Marriots from state to state. The BW I have stayed in here in Washington State have been really nice and with a breakfast that included warm foods and even self made waffles. But this one was a continental and was in dire need of new beds and sheets. We will definitely try the Marriot next year.

the hotel was the Holiday Inn at Westbury.

they did have a hot breakfast menu available....but not complimentary.

The continential breakfast did include bagels, bread for toasting, apples, oranges, bannanas, yogert, cantalope, and Kellogg cereals such as Raisin bran, Rice Krispies, etc.

BUT the free continential breafast was from 6:30-9:00 am and only for TWO Adults per room. All the free continental foods also must be eaten in the dining room, you couldn't take it back to your room.

And they were really strict on the above free continental breakfast. I saw people VERY upset that arrived at 9:15- 10:00 for breakfast and all the food was put away by that time.

Our rate at 179 did include a hot breakfast for the room (but only up to $20 per room). but I could have reserved at the rate of 159.00/night and just ate the "free" food. But when I fully understood the way the hotel worked, I couldn't book at the 159 rate, it was up to 169.

So we made sure we ate our breakfasts in the hotel, and come as close to using our $20/room as we could.

KP10, you have learned early grasshopper. ;) Jamz, even at sea, says, I can't wait to come home from the Academy in Nov. He'll only be there a few weeks before the Thanksgiving holiday. Dang! LOL

I agree with you guys. That is one expensive trip, especially if you have a family. We took a family of four and dropped a couple of grand each time we've gone no matter where we stayed. We tried to find a condo/house to rent, a state park with perhaps cabins, a beach house, anything. I looked at all options. The Suite hotels are great but not many have two bedrooms & have some travel time involved. I dunno. Wish I could offer some advice. A camper would be awesome especially with little ones. They could snack & plug in a video to watch during down times. If I should hear of any good camp grounds close, I will post back. Its a wondeful idea!

You know the Newman club just took some of the students on a "retreat" at a nearby camp. I am wondering if we plan early if we could book the camp for next parent's weekend....... It was along the beach. I am certain it wouldn't be great accomodations but if they were affordable and spacious and along the beach it might be a great way to do things.

Hey KP10 what was the name of that camp?

yeah, but I thought the retreat was like 90 minutes away......

I think I am getting closer to an answer:

<a href="http://www.usmmaaa.com/pages/GuideforCampersandMobileHomes.htm%5B/url%5D">http://www.usmmaaa.com/pages/GuideforCampersandMobileHomes.htm</a></p>

any idea who I need to call about this?

I think I can help out here. We stayed at Battle Row Campground last weekend. It is a county facility and the rates are only $20 per night. It is about a 35 minute drive east on the L.I.E. at exit 48. You have to do all reservations by snail mail. The following is a link to their website: <a href="http://www.nassaucountyny.gov/agencies/Parks/WhereToGo/campgrounds/battlerow.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.nassaucountyny.gov/agencies/Parks/WhereToGo/campgrounds/battlerow.html</a></p>

OK. This might seem like a dumb question, but couldn't one of the midshipmen find out the answer to the question concerning reserving space for RV on campus during special functions? I know they do this as well at Graduation time. This should be a mission for the plebes or midshipmen who read this board.
I am amazed at the lack of quality that some of the families found when paying relatively high prices for a night in a chain motel. I've always said, All I wanted to do was rest my head and shower in a motel room, not be surrounded by gold curtains, marble desks and diamond faucets. Yet, such a basic assumption of 'clean sheets' seems to be asking too much. It's time to be a squeaky wheel when we are paying customers!

MountaineerMom

I am wondering if we "block" rooms as a group if there would be some sort of discount?

My youngest plays hockey and we travel with that and that is what we do.

The hockey organizations have "host hotels" in which we have our team manager call ahead and block rooms for the team families to reserve.

We get a discounted rate and the hotel also gives a rebate to the hockey association in the local area.

I am wondering if there is a way to do this. Have host hotels for the USMMA, they would get more business from the academy and in return give a discount to the patrons and a rebate to the academy too.

It won't help the sheets but maybe it would help the rates we pay.

I have stayed in far cleaner hotels as well as a much better breakfast for half the cost of what we stayed in. I know it is NY but golly you should get something better for what we paid.

KP10Mom....When my son was getting all his papers sent the summer before INDOC started, there was a list of hotels/motels that gave discounts to USMMA parents. Was this included in your son's package?

MountaineerMom

It’s amazing what happens at even the nicest hotels. I stayed at this really fancy place in South Carolina, and the shower didn't even work!!!

At least they offered you a discount for your inconvenience!! ;-)

Ha ha was that JM's place?

LOL I told him to go get into the pool & I'd give him a bar of soap. LOL Hey! This place was good enough for Roosevelt, its good enough for you pal! LOL We have cookies & sweet tea too! C'mon down. I'll give you guys a group rate & promise to have clean sheets. Community bathing poolside 8am to 11am LOL

Roosevelt's no-tell motel from what I've heard.

And who knows what Strom Thrumond did there!

Jamzmom, if you are ever in the area, I'd love to take you and show you the sites, you are a hoot. Val
