Safe hotels near WUSTL?

Does anyone know which of the hotels near WUSTL are safe? I have heard that the inner city area is quite dangerous and I would appreciate it if someone could give me the names of the more secure hotel(s) that they know of.

Knight Center on campus, and the Sheraton in Clayton.

Also Ritz Carleton in Clayton (expensive).

I don't think there are any hotels in the "inner city". All of the regular chain hotels in Clayton are fine, and close to Wash U.

Thank you for all your helpful comments! By any chance, are there other hotels in WUSTL? Knight Center is already booked.

I found a hotel called Cheshire Lodge at 6300 Clayton Road - I take it that it is a safe one then?

WashU is pretty far from the dangerous part of St. Louis. You'll be fine if you stay at any of the hotels mentioned above. It's only if you go a few miles east that you get into the "inner city."

The Cheshire is terrible. Go to the Sheraton in Clayton. They have free shuttle service to & from airport , free shuttle to Wash U. Plus the rates are affordable.

Knight Center is the only Wash U hotel.

What about the Chesire is terrible? By the way, I'm going with my parents by car so I wouldn't need the free shuttle that Sheraton offers.

There is a new hotel on Oakland between the main campus and the medical campus. I can't remember the name - i think it's Hampton Suits. The location is very convenient.

The rooms at the Cheshire are old, dark, and dingy (outdated decor). We had reservations for 3 nights, and after the first night, we switched to another hotel.

Oh...thanks for the warning. Old, dark, and dingy is definitely not what I am looking for. So in terms of comfort which hotel is better? Sheraton or Hampton Inns and Suites?

We stayed at the Hampton Inn at Forest Park. It was nice and new.

I stayed at the Sheraton 2 weekends ago, and it was a very nice experience. I could walk to First Watch for breakfast, and downtown Clayton for lunch. I think both hotels are fine. The Hampton Inn is in the city and the Sheraton is west of Wash U (a bit suburban). The Hampton Inn is closer to Forest Park, Wash U Med School, and the Central West End (trendy area).

There is a Crown Plaza in Clayton as well that is fine but the Sheraton is probably a notch better. I had $119 at the CP with my AAA card and $125 at the Sheraton by telling them I was a Wash U parent. The standard price is something like $169. Clayton is only a mile or two west of Wash U. Nice thing is you don't have to rent a car. The metro line goes from the airport to Wash U in about 25 mins (change trains to go west at Forest Park/DeBaliviere) and the next two stops after Wash U are in Clayton (take the second stop for the Sheraton or CP). You can also ride the train east into St. Louis to see the sites there.

Silverwing, you really need to visit WashU and the surrounding areas. You have a completely wrong idea of the whole area. You willl be very pleasantly surprised.

The area immediately around the university is unaffordable to the vast majority of us and is filled with very nice, old homes. It is very upscale. We stayed at the Crowne Plaza in Clayton. Clayton is a sleepy little town that is very quiet at night. It has downtown office buildings and hotels. The CP was OK, but probably not up to par for that brand name.

If you want to save some money, you can stay a bit further from WashU. Last time we found a deal on hotwire.com for the Milenium Hotel downtown $69 per night with a view of the Arch. At other times we have stayed close to the airport where decent hotels are in the $50 to $70 range. We usually rent a car (they are inexpensive and handy in St Louis). Since nothing is far away in St Louis (usually at the most a 20 to 25 minute drive) - we have not stayed in the Clayton area for the past few years.

I have relatives whom we frequently visit in Clayton, and it is a beautiful area, as is the area around WUSTL. I am really not sure where anyone gets the idea that it is a bad area.....

Just an addition to the above post. The only reason we have not stayed in the Clayton area is price. As far as the area - it is beautiful and very safe. That also describes anywhere in the immediate campus vicinity. Our junior decided to live off campus this year and feels very safe at all times.
