Inexpensive hotel for WashU visit?

I have read the CC threads on hotels near WUSTL as well as the info on the university's website and I've checked prices on those already. Does anyone have a recommendation for a less-expensive (< $100), clean hotel in a safe area of St. Louis? Close proximity to WUSTL is not essential, but it would be nice. Thanks for any info!

We have used hotels near the airport and the Westport area. If you have a car it is only about 20 minutes away. Prices are in the $60 per night range. Have been happy with both the Clubhouse Inn & Suites and Courtyard by Marriott - Westport. The Clubhouse Suites included a decent breakfast in the price. Also a nice shoping area with some good restaurants for dinner just around the corner. You can PM me for more info.

Thanks! I appreciate the info. :-)

We've stayed at the Baymont in Hazelwood several times. It's clean, pleasant, and inexpensive.

We just stayed at the Residence Inn-St. Louis Galleria. Request the Wash U rate. For $105, we got a great room, dinner (manager's reception M-Th is dinner and drinks), and a good breakfast. Rooms are very clean, staff is very friendly (as are the other guests), and it is extremely well-located. Mall and dining options are within a very easy drive, as is the University. It's a wonderful area! Enjoy your visit ... we certainly did!

We stayed at the Frontenac Hilton using HHonors free night but I think they may have reasonable rates depending on the night. Not sure of Wash U rates. It was only 10 minutes on the highway from campus. The rooms were very nice - the whole hotel has a chateaux theme. As Hilton Gold members we got free continental breakfast and late night coffee and dessert. There's also free hors d'oeuvres and $2 wine/beer before dinner.

we got a coupon for a free night if we went on a visit! didn't use it, didn't go, but you might ask if they still offer that

I always enjoyed the B&B (Lister House, or some similar name). Not expensive, close, and a chance to mingle with other parents at breakfast.

we stayed at a radissons hotel nearby. not sure about the rates, but they did offer a wash u discount

Best Western on the Park is a no frills, but clean, hotel just across the park from WashU (5-10 minute drive to WashU). We have stayed there several times. Their rates have always been less than $100 per night.

I recommend the cheshire inn on clayton ave. There is no closer hotel, and it is cheaper than all the chains... and pretty nice to boot

I found this great rate for the Sheraton Clayton Plaza hotel (one of the ones listed on the WashU website). Check out this Southwest Airlines webpage:

http://www.southwest.com/jp/hotfares3.shtml?src=et031406

I just booked it for $75 per night! I think this offer is very limited, so if you're planning a visit to WashU, look at this soon. You do not have to book a flight on Southwest Air to get this rate.

I tried to edit my previous post about the Sheraton Clayton Plaza, but I wasn't able to do so. After checking some reviews of the hotel, I do not think I will be staying there after all. It's a good thing the reservations can be cancelled. :-)

Marilyn, I'm from STL, and you were across from our best mall, Plaza Frontenac. Louis Vuitton, Neimans, Saks, etc and some great restaurants (Canyon Cafe outside in the summer is amazing) Just FYI if you go back to visit sometime and stay in the same place.

For Shagonov-

We did walk around the mall before dinner and it was very lovely; odds are if our S ends up at WashU we will be back there. It was a Sunday night so not too many restaurants were open; we ended up at Jimmy's on the Park and had a very nice meal; great location!

Ahhh Jimmy's! Demun is a cute street, I used to go to the coffee shop two doors down (Kaldis) before school every morning. If your S ends up there, let me know and I'll tell you all the good places to go! Maybe I'll just make a thread called "St. Louis Native Telling You Why STL Is ACtually Great" people don't seem to realize how amazing STL is once you really get to know it and don't tihnk it's limited to the delapidated part of downtown and the loop.

We stayed downtown at the Embassy Suites last year during spring break (one week before Final Four) when we did the first visit and agree the downtown was disappointing (except Union Station). Seems like the burbs are a nicer place to stay. Enjpyed Forest Park Zoo last year; this year we went to the Botanical Gardens and were very pleased - and that was in the winter - could see it would be beautiful in full bloom. We went to the top of the Arch to satisfy my husband and all I can say is, well, we went to the top of the arch! Will the new ballpark really be ready by opening day (my H's question)? I read a lot about the great restaurant scene in STL but apparently not on Sunday night; the old Italian restaurants we've been to were, well, old Italian. (We're a little spoiled being from the Chicago suburbs.) Although our S was very impressed last year with the service at Tony's since he hasn't really been to those kind of restaurants.

I used Priceline where you bid for a hotel. I chose the Forest Park/Clayton area and bid $47 for a 3 star hotel. I ended up with the Sheraton Clayton Plaza, which is about two miles from campus and looks like a great hotel. It is one of the hotels listed on the Admissions Office website. It was $61 with taxes. Of course, the down side of Priceline is that you can't cancel and get a refund.
