I'm a california girl looking to go east or to the midwest. I don't really want to go to a state school. I go to a really crappy public school that only offers 10 APs, so I will have taken only 5 by the time I graduate.

GW and American are possible matches that are strong in IR. Plus DC is a great city to be in for internships and work experience possibilities. Georgetown, Tufts, NYU, and Johns Hopkins are all very strong in IR but would be reaches. Not really sure about anthro...

Yeah GW's location is amazing, especially as an IR major. The State Department is right across the street, the White House is right down the street, and the Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, and Jefferson Memorial are all in sight. I visited it last week and it was incredibile. However it is an urban campus, so if you want a gated campus with rolling green lawns, and a more traditional feel, GW is not for you.

I'm familiar with anthropology programs but less sure about IR programs. GWU, as mentioned, has a truly excellent anthropology program with strengths in all four areas of the discipline. Most of the best anthropology schools are public schools, but Boston U, Syracuse, and U Rochester also have good anthropology and IR programs.
