Any current Case students who can comment on the teen mob problem in the Public Square of Downtown Cleveland?
Is it really a problem and if so is it isolated to that area or does it spill onto campus, Little Italy and any other area that students frequent? I know the media can sensationalize news but if there is any truth to this it is a little disturbing. My D wants to go to an urban school so she has access to what a city offers but if you can't go anywhere because you are fearful of something like this happening defeats the purpose. Click on the link to see what I am referring to....

Downtown Cleveland is a good 5 miles away and I don’t believe organized crime has been a great factor here. The problems in downtown are most likely completely separate from issues on campus.

That being said, the area around Case Western can get really dangerous really quickly. On campus is pretty safe, but stepping even a few blocks off can put one at risk. Downtown is actually quite safe from my experience. More concerning is finding the time to actually go there and feeling safe on the transportation between campus/downtown (though travelling in groups easily conquers that).

Overall, to give you a reassuring analogy, I think there’s a better chance that Lake Erie floods the campus before downtown criminal activity infiltrates University Circle.

ChiGuy, are you a student or former student of Case? I am happy to hear you feel that campus security is more than competent. Your analogy is reassuring but will need to see for myself when we visit in March. What part of campus will put a student in a dangerous situation if they step even a few blocks off campus? Everyone says to just be smart and you will be fine, trying to put that in perspective.

P.S. I realize my link did not work, will try and repost what I have read not very tech savy…

If you follow Euclid to either the northeast corner or the Western area, it can get rough. Everywhere else is safe, but yes, exercise good judgment as everyone has been saying.

Public Square of downtown Cleveland does not “spill” onto campus…University Circle is 5 miles east of downtown and at least a 20 min. drive. Take a look at this link…hopefully it will allow access to some of the videos…it will give you a quick glimpse of UC… I really think you should ask all these questions at your visit in March…you could make yourself crazy scrutinizing every perceived danger on any campus. : )

You are right Sdgal2, I am driving myself crazy! I know Public Square does not spill onto campus, more concerned about the same type of problems making its way onto campus. I suppose what you are telling me is that University Circle is safe and can’t be compared to Public Square of downtown Cleveland. We’ll be there in March and look forward to the visit! Thank you everyone for your insight!

So grateful for the College Confidential site, all have been so helpful with all the information provided regarding safety. It is my number one concern for obvious reasons. Thanks bopper for clarifying, thought Case was part of Cleveland. I’m curious is Magnolia Drive, Juniper Road and Wade Avenue part of the North Campus?

My DD is a current Sophomore at CASE. You should look at some of my previous posts history concerning CASE safety. Also look for historical posts about this same questions as it seems to come up a lot for cleveland/case.

Magnolia Drive, Juniper Road and Wade Avenue are on North Campus and it is IMO a nice part of town, again just stay on campus. It is where incoming freshman and some sophomores live. My DD has been in that area for the last two years with no safety problems. You will learn a lot from your upcoming visit.

Murphy,
We visited Case last year about this time, the campus itself seems safe; our hotel nears Cleveland Clinic, which is not far from Case, we saw police car every few blocks and patrolling all the time, it assured us. Just like ChiGuy said, only a few blocks away from campus could be very sketchy, so you have to use your own judgement.

My brother attends Cleveland Institute of Music, which shares campus. The area is very safe. They also have a security escort if you are out late and don’t feel comfortable on your own. Campus is also in the jurisdiction of several police forces so there are always cars on patrol. Thee is the university circle police, clinic police, Cleveland police, etc

I just visited my son, a freshman at CWRU, and I chose to not rent a car,
And walk between his performance at Severance Hall, his dorms in the north part of
Campus and my hotel near the South Residential Campus and Little Italy restaurants. I felt perfectly safe at all times, but I limited my foot travel to before about 10 pm. East Cleveland is known to have more crime. We felt safe on the Healthline Bus to downtown Cleveland as well.

Murphy you’ll feel better after your visit! CWRU is an amazing school and my freshman son loves it! The campus is very safe and you can be confident your daughter will quickly find out from other students where it is and is not safe to go when exploring off campus.

Yes - you are correct that University Circle is a separate and unique area of the city. Also realize that there is going to be crime in any big city. But at Case you really have the best of all worlds: a great school in a wonderful city but isolated in a beautiful cultural oasis well away from the crime-ridden areas.

Have fun at your accepted students visit - be sure to register for Lolly the Trolley tour when you get to campus (they fill up fast, so do it first thing). It’s a great tour and really helpful in getting to know what’s around the city.

@murphy1008 - I was also going to mention that there is a World Class art museum right next to campus at the heart of University Circle. The Cleveland Museum of Art is a real gem with an amazing collection and it recently underwent an astounding renovation/expansion project that is reported to cost a total of $350 million! (that amount is per Wikipedia - I just knew it was closed down for a number of years for remodeling).

Hope this gives you some more perspective on the area. Cleveland is really up-and-coming and in spite of some occasional negative press and inevitable crime in certain areas - it’s really an exciting place. CWRU has a video you can find on their main web page titled “Thanks Cleveland - It’s the Reason”. Check it out and get excited about your visit.

I was just on campus the last two weekends. DD’s spring break was last week so I picked her up and dropped her off. I stayed one night each weekend. I have never had problems with anything. Car has never been broken into and we park it on streets overnight. DD’s boyfriend was there a few weekends ago for a formal and DD got him a weekend parking pass for the garage because it is easy to get tickets if you are not paying attention to parking times allowed. So far, safety has been fine and I have never heard of my DD’s girlfriends having any problems either. Enjoy your visit! Spring weekends are hit or miss, sometimes cold weather and other times beautiful spring weather. Campus is beautiful when spring blossoms are in bloom! Which was when we visited for her accepted student weekend back in 2012, it was in April.
