I was accepted to UMN College of Science and Engineering as well as the Honors College. It’s the furthest college from home that I applied to but it’s also one of my top choices right now.
My dad doesn’t feel the area around the West Bank of the Minneapolis campus is safe. Could anyone comment on the safety of Cedar-Riverside and/or if there is a big overlap between campus and the neighborhood?
Being in CSE you probably won’t find yourself on West bank too often. Even if you do, the only time it would be unsafe would be late at night walking around by yourself. There is not much overlap between campus and the surrounding neighborhood.
CSE students are typically on the east bank. You may not have any classes on west bank. I just spent a couple hours walking west bank area this week (I’m female). We are in that area frequently (we live just a couple miles away). If my kid attends UMN he will be in honors housing in Middlebrook on the west bank. The campus is pretty self contained there and you are walking off campus to get to business. There is a large high rise there. The driving patterns are a little erratic through the business area on the west ban so just watch yourself as a pedestrian. And that’s probably as much the students as anything.
That said, use urban smarts when walking after dark and that goes for anywhere in Minneapolis. Don’t walk alone.
My son is an OOS student in CSE who did have a class on the west bank. Safety never came up. Not once, all year.
