Safety School?

Like many others, I know my dream schools and its not like it is a stretch for me to get in there. However, I need to find myself a safety school or two that are fundamentally similar to my top choices. I'm majoring in Communications

My top schools currently are Boston College and Villanova. I'm also looking at Notre Dame, but that will be a stretch. As safety schools, I've looked at John Carroll and Loyola College in Maryland. I live near Buffalo, NY, so maybe something a little bit closer? Thats what is turning me away from Loyola. I'm also a sports fanatic so I'd like it if it were a D-1 school with a good sports program.

Thank you for your help

I guess Canisius, since it is in Buffalo would work, and (I think) has a reputation about equal to John Carroll if not higher, plus, both it and BC are jesuit schools. Duquesne, Stony Brook, and UMaine could also be good safeties, but I don't know about their communications programs

everyone at my school goes to Canisius. Its not that I want to be really close to home, I guess its just that I don't want my safety school 6 hours away. Keep in mind that I have the credentials to compete in admission at BC. Haha. I don't mean to be cocky, but I'm no joke.

Syracuse University Orange
Hofstra University Pride

Syracuse, Penn State, Ohio State, University of Pittsburgh...UBuffalo! UAlbany!

both Syracuse and Ithaca College have very fine Communication Programs. Though Ithaca is not Division I, I think sports is still an important part of the IC environment.
Newhouse school (communications) at Syracuse should never be considered a safety, but it is certainly worth applying to as it is one of the best communication departments around.

U Albany or Stony Brook

REALLY tough to get in to Syracuse communications school/prgm; it's also difficult to transfer from a less competive school at the uni into communications.

I have been thinking about Syracuse. But I have heard that Newhouse is very difficult to get into to. How about Emerson? Anybody know anything about it?

I think Emerson is more of an artsy school.

Yeah, I have heard that; however, they have a major that kinda interests me, Marketing Communication

Maybe I missed this part, but did you say your stats. If so, my bad. If not, people should not be throwing out safety ideas because they have no idea what your grades/scores are. You could be shooting for Notre Dame and BC, but have a 3.0 and a low SAT score.

I go to a private, Catholic school of about 160 kids.
GPA is roughly 96.2 with 4 APs (all my school offers--US, English Lit and Lang., Physics B)
I have a 31 on the ACT

I have plenty of leadership and EC's.

President of NHS
Co-Editor of Yearbook
Co-Captain of the Varsity Football team
Co-Captain of Scholastic Bowl
Vice President/Treasurer of my class.
Member of SADD, Mission Club, Jazz Ensemble, Concert Band
Lots of Community Service also

Paid Employment at local grocery store.

I hope this helps.

How about SUNY Geneseo? Not perhaps a big sports school, but they do have a Communications department.

Syracuse does seem like the closest thing to what you want, difficulty of admisson aside.

If you're definite about communications, then take a look at Emerson. You're in there for sure. It's more a pre-professional school than liberal arts college.

New York University

Ditto on the Syracuse nomination.

Have you considered Fordham? If you liked BC you might like the Rose Hill CAmpus - very similar looking, Jesuit core, etc. Their communications major is better and opportunities for internships are great because of the NYC connection.

Another - a bit more of a safety - in the northeast is Quinnipiac (CT). Closer than Loyola!!

Your GPA is outstanding and a 31 ACT is impressive. Syracuse University should be a great match for you.

does anyone know of a school in the north that would have an equivalent of wake forest university?

Holy Cross?
